Would you allow your child to take an elective class that is study skills (part of this is how to stay organized)?
You know how they have art, music, computer... there are so many skills need to be taught to be successful in learning to study and ALL kids should take a class like this but I am sure it is not offered.
If they offered it for everyone, then children with ADHD would also benefit.
Just wondering how many parents would want this for their child?

Our school offers such an elective and I insisted that my son is part of it. We explained to him the importance and he is on board ( almost we are big on choices but in this case, the adults made the decision. He is also taking environmental ed and that gets him outside once a week. He had to sacrifice woodworking...
My son goes to 8 grade and it is going to be his 3rd year of attending skills class. He does that instead of band or music.
This class is run by special ed teacher, who also checks their agenda, goes over grades etc. It is less structured class that also lets those less patient kids rest a little. I like it , he likes it.
I am sure this helps him a lot. I think if many of our children had this they would be more successful. My son is learning to take Cornell notes... I know it will make him a much stronger H.school student.
We changed our son's arts rotation to study skills class when he was in 6th grade and struggling. He stayed in the class for 7th grade and had a great year. We decided to drop the class this year and have him take Spanish in 8th grade. He's also in a tutoring program two evenings a week, so we're hoping he'll still be successful. If he starts struggling again we know we can put him back in the class.
No, we did not consider putting him in a study skills class because it would have taken him out of band or Latin, his two favorite classes. I work with him at home, so I felt it would have been redundant. I agree with you, though, study skills should be taught to everyone and it would benefit all kids. One of my daughters had an excellent teacher in 4th grade who taught them organization as part of their daily routine. As a high school teacher, I know this would not be hard to do in a middle or high school classroom.
Absolutely. I would definitely enroll my daughter in a study skills elective if it was offered in her middle school. I actually paid for a 2 week course this summer to help her with executive functioning and study skills.
My 7th grade grandson is in his second year of social skills class. They discuss situations, how things should be handled in school, help with homework.
He was getting suspended so many times we had to do something. I'm sure he would rather take art but he needs to succeed in school
