New to the group

Hi I’m new to the group. My son was diagnosed with adhd and odd two years ago.

I find the lack of understanding and comments from other people very upsetting at times. Any tips?

I just posted to group something to this regard. I feel you. I keep telling myself that people say things often out of ignorance or lack of knowledge about a particular subject. Our family is pretty new to the world of ADHD and ODD. So, we are not only dealing with building our knowledge about our child's diagnoses, but we are also new to the outside opinions that are popping up. Hoping we can find support and comfort here in this group with families like ours who are going thru the same or very similar challenges.

I find it hard not to take what people say personally. The only thing that helps me is to try not to respond right away. Take a day to think about what has been said before responding. Otherwise I am like a mother bear ready to rip heads off. It makes me look like the crazy one. It's hard , people who do have a child or spouse with ADHD will never understand. They may say the do but their comments and actions usually show they do not. Good luck it's a very bumpy road.

When people would make negative comments and criticize parenting because of a meltdown and misbehavior in public, I would tell them that they are welcome to take him home for the weekend and "fix him". I never had any takers. It is easy to criticize when one does not know all the facts. I ignored the comments because they were based on ignorance. We just have to do the best we can (with support from professionals and those who understand).
