I have a 6 year old boy with ADHD and ODD. He takes focalin xr and it has helped him a lot. I’ve noticed though that when it’s out of his system, he really has trouble communicating. For example, I could ask him a question and his answer will have absolutely nothing to do with what I asked. He sometimes seem to not understand what I’m saying. At first I thought it may just be that his vocabulary isn’t broad enough, but he does it with things that I’ve said hundreds of times and he really should know. At times, he gets frustrated that he can’t get the right words out. Like maybe it’s in his head but just comes out of his mouth all messed up. He gets upset that I don’t understand him. He is adopted and I’m fairly certain was exposed to drugs in utero. I don’t know if that could have an impact on this or if it’s ADHD or both. No clue. Wondering if anyone else had experience with this. Thanks.

My son has similar issues with responses. He isn’t on Focalin XR but had both ADHD and ODD. He is getting better at it but he gets so frustrated when he is trying to respond but is clearly not able to get out what is in his head properly. He explains it by saying he is a 1 thinker. One thought and one thing at a time. Maybe try one liners until he can adjust to doing multiples. Praying for you and your boy.
