Mom of 5year old with ADHD

Hi I'm the mom of a 5 Year old soon to be six-year-old diagnosed with ADHD I am trying to understand What he is going through and experiencing. He is in K5 program and I am having the worst time with him and school, teachers and administrators. I joined for support as well as knowledge.

I’ve been told that having ADHD is like standing in front of a hundred TV sets, all of them on different channels, and all of the shows are interesting.

My kiddo is 6 and she has been having a hard time in K so we are on independent study, where we meet with the teacher, and I present material at home.

Working at home takes us hours, so we break it up. Our current routine (that she suggested, and I stick her to it) is 1 paper, 10 min break, 2 papers, 15 min break, 3 papers, 20 minute break, then repeat the last set as long as I can stand it.

I let her get up and circle the chair once, or kneel and wiggle her booty. I use small incentives like a fruit snack at the end of each sentence, or a peanut after each set of 10’s when writing to 100. Sometimes I put on some classical music and she makes her pencil dance.

It’s tough but you gotta be your kiddo’s voice with school administration. See if you can get a meeting with the administrators to discuss options. Show them you aren’t going away! You’ve got this!

Hi, I would say that you need to start with getting outside support for you and your son. I know I had a tough time accepting my child's diagnosis. This will come in form of some sort of behavioral therapist that can come to your home. Second, your son is only 5, don't stress so much about his academic performance, focus on working with the school to figure out why is he misbehaving, is he bored, discouraged, etc.

Hi momfkj I feel your psain. My son was diagnosed when he was 6 and honey it has been a struggle different meds, 504 plans etc. It's alot. This year my son finally got an IEP I couldn't take it no more and I got a lawyer and won. Just get a great support system because you will need it.
