Darinea,

I went through the exact same thing at your age. I felt like I was doing my best but I just couldn't get the grades I needed to. My teachers and parents always said "she's so smart, she's just being lazy". In reality, I had ADHD, depression, and anxiety. It sucks because you feel so alone and like you are letting everyone down. Remember, being born with ADHD is not your fault. All you can do is try and better yourself. When you study, try studying for 30 minutes and then take a times 5 minute break. Keep doing that until you really know the material. Those of us with ADHD have to take breaks or we get bored and stop caring. It's okay to need extra help and extra time. Don't be embarrassed. I hope that this has helped!

Hi Darinea, I'm sorry to hear about your situation..... Parents should be the first people you talk to but if that is difficult, you need to reach out for help outside of home. Is there a counselor at your school? You need somebody to talk to. But please don't jump a head.

Find a good time you and your mom can sit and talk without any time pressure.

Do you also live with your dad? If your mom is not open to talk, talk to your dad.

I hope the situation gets better for you...

No I am fostered. I live with my foster mum.

And thank you

You can also talk to your pediatrician. They will understand and be able to recommend you get tested. It may help with your mom as well if your Dr is involved in the conversation. Keep reaching out for help until someone listens to you. Good luck.

Darinea, I'm sorry you're having a hard time in school. Know that what you're going through is normal when you have ADHD. Don't give up and don't get down on yourself. You can talk to your teacher and explain that you have ADHD if he or she doesn't already know. Ask if you can have help to redo the essay. If not, then when another assignment or essay is given, ask the teacher for help along the way before the essay is due so you know you'll have greater success with the assignment. Most teachers are willing to help. It's why they went in to teaching in the first place. Being successful with your ADHD and overcoming those things that are most difficult for you is going to mean paying attention to your challenges and figuring out strategies of how to deal with them - like getting help with schoolwork ahead of time, or retaking tests. You can do this!

Have you actually received a diagnosis, or do you think you have ADHD because of how you act and feel? Also, are you located in the United States? The reason I ask is that there are programs and laws that help kids with ADHD and other disabilities to succeed in school, but you have to have a diagnosis.

I was diagnosed when I was 8 years old so about 7 years age. And I live in Australia.

I don’t know what services are available to you, but your guidance counselor at the school should have information, and is often an underutilized part of the school staff. I wish I had more advice for you, but I’m the mom of a 5 year old in the US. Good luck.
