I am excited to join this group to discuss how others are managing their ADHD children through training. Our 8 year old is ADHD and seems to be doing OK without medication. We are curious about others experiences with medication.

Hi. Welcome to the group. I only joined last week and it has been really helpful for me. My son was diagnosed with ADHD maybe 4 years ago. He has been on Methylphenidate ever since. He is 14 now and, honestly, his behavior is getting worse. I don't feel like the meds are working very well at all (maybe he's not on the right ones?). He's also seeing a therapist, but he refuses to say much. I recently tried regulating his diet, cutting out sugar (carbs, certain fruits, etc) and adding supplements. This did not last very long though, because as a 14 year old, he is ultimately going to eat what he wants when he is not at home, and he fought me on taking so many supplements every morning and night. I feel like if your child is doing well without meds there is no reason to fix something that is not broken. It's hard to regulate my son when he is at his dad's 50% of the time and I don't know how well he is sticking to his "new way of living" over there. His dad tells me one thing but then I hear something different from the kids. All I know is I wasted almost $400 on taking him to my Naturopath and buying supplements. If you are able to regulate your child's diet and do it the natural way, I would suggest that. I wish I would have known then what I know now. Trying to instill a "new and healthy way of living" on a 14 year old (with ADHD nonetheless) is exhausting! Good luck to you!

Thank you for your reply. Yeah, I'm sure it must be difficult changing his diet. I was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes when I turned 19 and I remember the anger and resentment that I had with the new dietary restrictions. I like your idea of trying another drug if the methylphenidate is not working. That may be the easiest solution. Best wishes.
