My son had never tried that before. We tried Ritalin which seems to be working

It may be worth trying Concerta if your son is truly having trouble focusing Concerta is an extended release version of Ritalin. 18mg is a fairly low dose.

Both of my sons have been on varied doses of Concerta for the last 3 years.

We dose just enough to get them by. Start small and add conservatively.

Good luck

We tried Concerta, but it lasted 'too long' and my daughter could not get to sleep. Switched to Vyvanse..wears off in about 10 hours for her, but all kids are different. Good luck!

Concerta made a huge difference for my daughter. She went from hating school to excelling.

Hi I was wondering how the Concerta is working now for your daughter? Any chances

The decision to medicate your child is definitely difficult. We resisted medicating our 9 year old son until about four months ago, when he began taking Focalin XR. It has been life changing for all of us. He is thriving for the first time in his life. And the rest of our family has been released from years of managing his symptoms, which has taken a toll on all of our relationships. I wish we had done this sooner and saved us all years of struggle and misery. There are side effects, but they are manageable, and the benefits far outweigh them, at least for us. If you feel like you’ve tried everything without success, maybe it would be worthwhile for you to at least give the medication a try. We have found that all the other things we have been doing with him, now are actually working with a little help from the medication. And Concerta I believe is like Focalin in that it completely leaves the system within a number of hours. If you find you don’t like anything about it, you can stop immediately, or try something else. Good luck with your decision!

Thanks!

You don't have anything to lose by trying it. If it doesn't help then you can stop giving it to him. My son has been on concerta since 3rd grade (now in 7th) and it helps tremendously. I know it's hard but worth the try.

My son is in regular classroom with accommodations and in a couple of classes there is an Aide (not specifically for him).

By the way my son started w 18mg the first month then went to 27mg, which is what he has been on ever since. He still can be impulsive and confrontational but as he matures he learns to deal with it. We did counseling but he didn't want to go anymore and said he can help himself. So we stopped.

Some kids do great on it, my grandson got violent on it. But all it took was stopping it to make that symptom go away. Don't know if it'll help till you try. Kid gets tired of getting in trouble all the time

He is 8 and he has a lot of problems in class, he behaves good but he can’t focus at all so he never finishes his work, and the teacher says that he is not learning. They suggested me to put him in a especial education class. I am a teacher and I know that this solution would be the worst for him.Furthermore, he is very clever, he is really interested in Science .Sorry for my English, I am from Spain.

You received a lot of great advise. Medicating is definitely a hard decision. We just started Concerta just under 2 weeks ago. It has made a HUGE difference. He's more focused, talks less, gets homework done in a matter of minutes not hours. Though I am concerned because he is restless at bedtime. He's as sleepy as he can be but can't go sleep, he still wants to talk or ask for different things and does everything possible not to go to bed.

What if you could have your child do his homework without hassle, does it like right now. No constant reminders to get to work. What if he could do his work without meltdowns and a tom of sensory breaks. If you could see the future and you saw a mild mannered child without knowing that that child was on medication to improve functionality and less movement. If our dr would have told us how much better mornings and evenings could be without yelling and hitting screaming and pulling out our hair is theirs.

Take it one day at a time. Focus on one week at a time. Don't think about what the medicine could do in the future. There are a few therapy aids that could also assist the medication, such as a weighted vest and therapy ball, and a band around his chair at school.

21 pills for 21 days and what a difference. Concert equals calmer and more focused days

Hope you find your way!!!

My son has trouble sleeping as well. I give him melatonin. It doesn't work great but helps. I am also trying to get him to meditate (not easy getting a 13 yr old to meditate lol).
