My 6 year old son is diagnosed with ADHD, ODD, and a sensory processing disorder. I have a CARE team meeting schedule for today to discuss an IEP or 504. Is there anything i need to know? Anything I need to prepare for? He is not currently on any medication, but has an appointment in mid march to discuss medication options. He struggles with impulse control and has a check in, check out sheet. Most days he does not meet his goal. His day varies from one extreme to another. He either has a very good day or a very bad day. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance!

I would say in terms of working with the Care team, just be prepared that some schools are hesitant to approve IEPs. They are more likely to approve a 504. And know that your input in forming the 504 is important. You know your child best, his strengths and weaknesses, what works and doesn't work. As you come up with possible solutions for the 504, also know that the things which will be implemented may or may not work. This means that adjustments to the 504 may need to be made down the road.
Either way, the process is lengthy, as it takes time to do in-school testing. But it's worth having the additional help for your child. At the very least, we can educate the educators on ADHD.
So the meeting went well in my opinion. Like i said in the original post he has a check in check out sheet. We have decided to beef it up a bit. Meaning that instead of just checking in at the beginning and end of each day he will check in with his greeter a few to many times a day depending on how they want to start out. When he goes to check in during the school day he will then be able to get an immediate reward for good behavior or a pep talk to help motivate if he's having a difficult time. We also decided on the going with the 504 and luckily because he just went through psychological testing and the doctor gave a very detailed report the process will go much faster. He also needs to be removed from the classroom a few times a day and we discussed putting a very routine plan in place for when that happens so he knows what to expect and that he won't be "getting out" of doing any work. Thank you to those that replied.
