504 plan suggestions

My 16 y/o 504 plan is due to update in 6 days. I am looking for suggestions for the following school issue(s). This is his first year in the 9th grade, and so far it has been a nightmare!!!. The main issue is in the last four weeks he has received five ( F's). All associated with in class assignments. His current 504 plan allows him to turn in assignments late, if he did not finish it then he can bring it home as homework, cues from the teacher to pay attention, breaks, any test scores below 70, he can retest , xtra time to test and front row seating. I purchased an agenda for him to keep up with his assignments, test, etc and he does not use it, he does not completes his in class assignments, does not bring it home and do not remember it`s due. I'm not sure what is left to add on the plan. He is medicated, morning and evening, just had some adjustment to the meds. Just not sure. Today , he received three F`s for one class. It was a three part assignment and he received zero points. When questioned why, he stated he had trouble logging in on the computer. (that the latest thing at the school he attends all 9th thru 12th graders gets a laptop to use in classes). So , I said to him did you notify the teacher that you could not log on, No was his answer, he says I was able to log on later but did not finish, so ,did you tell the teacher you did not finish , another No . Problem solving has never been my son strong point or any point. I throw my hands up and think what good is the 504 plan if he does not use the accomdations.

Alex_7- I am so sorry you and your son are going through this.. our son is only in middle school but has had years where he has had the same experience. The first question I have is can you ask for him to have a study skills period at school? He would have to give up his elective, but let me tell you it is worth it. These classes are run by people who can really help your son with organization, study habits, etc.

The second thing is him talking to thearpist who can discuss why he is not able to manage all that it takes to get better grades. Sometimes children who have ADHD are unable on their own to manage it all and school support must be there to help them. Most kids like your son really don't want to do bad in school, they just don't have the ability to juggle it all.

I understand that you said he is on medication, is that for decreasing impulsivity or focus? If he is not taking something to help him focus in my opinion you should consider it. I know it would be adding another medication, but if he is unable to focus this medication really helps.

As far as the 504 plan... the only thing I could see if someone to help him manage everything and that could easily be resolved by a study skills and need to be written in. But if you can't get him a study skills then I would ask for time with a qualifies staff person to help manage work/study skills. This person should also communicate with the teachers about what he is missing or needs to redo, becuase he can't keep up with this on his own.

One last thing there was a recent article in CHADD about homework, I really recommend you reading it

Hope this helps..

Just a big hug and hope these suggestions help you! So stressful.

Thank you, I will recommend the study class, and this year I will include him in the meetings. Up to this point, it has always been me sitting in the meetings. I will allow him to participate so he can be involve.

See if you can get his 504 plan changed to an IEP and request NO homework. You might see if you can get someone to sit with him at the end of the day and go over all class assignments to see what needs to be turned in, etc. High school requires a lot more management than our ADHD boys can manage, for the most part. My son could not tell me why he wasn't doing his work, but he just didn't do it. Planners never worked for us. If you can put his schedules, etc on his phone, that might work.

That sounds great, I thought about an IEP before but always got shut down because he did not meet the criteria. I sent the special needs coordinator advance noticed that I am anticipating major modifications. His Elementary/middle school 504 plan is not working for high school.

Have a grandson just starting high school and keeping my fingers crossed!

In middle school teacher tutorials were a life saver. In lower grades I would email the teacher and arrange after school tutorials. By the time he got to 8th grade he was doing it on his own. It would just be a small group, the teacher could help more with the assignment etc. He did much better one on one than in class. I told him unfortunately all school can't be small group.
