Hello all,

My son was diagnosed last month after i had suffered literally 5 years. He will be 10 in april. I told everyone that i do not feel he is normal and that there is no way that his behavior is normal.. to be shot down over and over " typical boy"... " all boys do that" So all boys flip the kitchen table over and throw chairs then run screaming and hit walls? All boys do this? So finally one of the teachers at my sons new school .. yes our 4th school... said you know i think he has something. Finally one voice of support is all i needed to be more forceful with getting him seen. I even switched doctors because the one he grew up with said.. oh just age probably..

He is seeing a councelor now at school who is actually a real therapist for a hospital who comes there to help kids. I do not medicate.. as of yet. Im terrified to do so because im afraid of the effects when he is older that taking the medicine now will do. I do not want damage done.. however im very tired. SOOOO very tired.

He has recently started lying.. and i mean ALOT. He says its raining i have to go look for myself type deal. I also learned he is not sleeping at night and is waking say midnight then just staying awake. Or not falling asleep until 2 am just laying in his bed. When we check on him he pretends to be asleep. When we are all asleep he sneaks to the kitchen downstairs and gets food and takes to his room. I discovered this yesterday because my inlaws are coming and i did a major cleaning.. finding 6 bags of candy .. which i dont buy candy.. where did this all come from??!?! then packs of crackers and peels of oranges.. He apparently decided to start selling his toys at school.. kids there have plenty of cash. Then taking that to the store across from school after i leave from dropping them off and buys this candy. Sneaks it home and eats it at night. Now i have to check his backpack when he leaves and when he comes in the door. Its like i am doing all to give him chances so i dont resort to medication and he is just pushing me to. Im .3% away from telling the counselor i can not take it anymore. Im so afraid he will become uncontrollable.

I am so sorry that you are going through this. Do yourself and your son a favor and find a dr who specializes in ADHD and spectrum disorders. Many people with ADHD have another thing going on as well. Don’t stress about medications! I wish I had started my son earlier than I had. Find a great Dr and listen to him/her.

Just don't understand that I'm afraid of medicine thing. Yes some of them have side effects. You try another one.

Sometimes the ADHD brain cannot go to sleep at night ,medicine helps with this. But you had to change 4 schools is pretty sad. What is it doing to your child's self-esteem to let him go on like this?

I hope you find a good pediatric psychiatrist to help you with this

I know your pain. We started our Meds journey 5 years ago.My son is now 14. I cried myself to sleep thinking of putting him on Meds. My mom said, your sons brain needs support. I began reading all I could about brain Meds and how they work on the brain and behavior. I realized that my sons brain needs support from a lack of neuro transmitters in the brain Meds. (These are Meds that support the brain in transferring messages from the left side of the brain to the right) I went to a company called Brain Balance. They had a free clinic. What they said about nutrition and excersize and how the brain responds made sense to me. I could not afford the program of 10 thousand dollars so I went to the library and checked out their book! I loved it so much I bought it. I realized my son Needs Meds. This began our 5 year journey of trying different types, strengths and combinations. There are so many types I hate to tell you what 4 he takes for fear you won’t try other ones. He is in a mood stabilizer, ADHD, Tourette abd Anxiety mends. Find a psychiatrist that can help you find the right mix and guide you through trying what they think would be the best ones to try first.. Don’t be afraid to try what he reccomend’s and increase and decrease according to your moms gut! I use prayer for this process. We have been kicked to the curb by more than one doctor who said our relationship was non combatable after my son vandalized his clinic bathroom during our doctors med check ( of course we repaired the walls and replaced their touletseat and pictures that had all bee scratched up by a penny in my sons pocket. He scratched ugly profanity over the walls toilet seat and pictures. ( of course we made him pay for it and replace all) it took all his birthday money he had been saving for years. All because he was so angry at the doctor because he was being medicated. We have been through many doctors. We now have a team of 5 doctors but they come and go as our insurance changes. My son wakes through the night and eats. I know because of the trail of crumbs and wrappers the next morning g. My son watches tv finds inappropriate stuff, on Netflix and the internet hooked to his xbox. We bought Disney circle which licks down all devices that com into my house. He can now have his xbox and iPad back) diabey circle was the best 200 dollars we have ever spent! He listens too music through the night. We have to pre download an mp3 player with approved music. He has to check his phone and music in with us every night. Disney curcle shuts off all internet and turns it back at different times for different devices. Every device is password protected. He can’t get into his phone or electronics without me setting a time and monitoring him. It gets a little tricky with school work but can be done. we have Meds that make him sleepy now. He still gets up and goes to bed at random times from bed at midnight to wake at 5 .he usually goes fishing at 5 am while I at at my gym class. I pick him up in my way home about 7. I know I know this is insane but I do what I have to do to advocate for our son! Help your son find a hoppby and a sport. My son loves fishing and wrestling and last 3 seasons baseball. All of these have helped him immensely. Make sure you take care of you so you can take care of him. I Have more to say but this is getting way too long sorry! If you want to talk message me on Facebook and we can phone talk. If interested I will let you know how to find me. Keep fighting the fight nobody will advocate better for your son Than you!!

Wow! I’m impressed with your dedication and perseverance. The Disney circle sounds like something I would like to try.

Thanks for the tip!

I was afraid to try medication too. Don't be. It will take some trial and error. But when you get a good one life will be more manageable. The sleep thing concerns me. Kids who are chronically sleep deprived show symptoms that mimic or exacerbate adhd. What is waking him up?
