Where do I start my sons problems first became apparent when he started school he lacked concentration couldn't keep still and disrupted the class he struggled with reading but was very intelligent .he was eventually referred to an educational psychologist who diagnosed dyslexia. I knew it was something else and pushed for another opinion .it took years he wasn't diagnosed till he was 12 so I had 8 years of trying to cope with the behaviour constant pressure from school until eventually it made me ill .he was given medication and that was it we were left to deal with it my marriage broke down the behaviour got worse I was distraught and so it continued.the behaviours changed from childlike problems to teenage problems drinking smoking taking drugs at 14 I couldn't keep him in the house at night he would sneak out while we was in bed he started missing school and was eventually excluded he started a college course but only completed the first year and now he's an adult and I'm still dealing with his problems he's aggressive ,selfish and not a very nice person at all and that is a consequence of ADHD hopefully there are new treatments and more understanding now he was being taught by teachers who knew nothing about the condition I had to research it and take the information into school .i totally believe it is hereditary as more members of his fathers family are affected I feel so sad that his life has turned out like this and guilty ,did I do enough to help him maybe I will never know

You did everything in your power to help him! Being a parent advocate for my daughter is the hardest thing I've ever done. There is no right or wrong answer. I think the best thing is you are still looking for ways to help your child even though he's grown and probably doesn't want it.

I don't know if you've tried but maybe you could seek therapy for yourself and in doing so find ways of getting through and peeling back his defensive personality. Good luck
