HiI am applying for Ill Health Retirement on my Teachers Pension.

Awaiting the GP to complete relevant medical section of the forms. Has anyone any tips to help speed up process? I know that GPs' time is in great demand at the moment.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Paul

Hi Paul, I've recently been through this and had a long delay getting the GP to complete the form. The main issue I discovered was that my GP Surgery wanted to be paid for the report before completing and returning to Occupational Health, but Occupational Health would only pay upon receipt of the form. It took a lot of phone calls to get to the bottom of this and an offer from me to pay for it myself, and then the GP did it. I don't know how long the stalemate would have gone on for! All sorted now, but took a lot of chasing. It might just be a backlog at your surgery, but from my experience it is worth checking the payment situation in case you've got the same issue.Best of luck.

I saw a gp about this last week and they just told to leave forms with them - I’m happy to pay the £70 myself to expedite . I’m just starting this process having been off ill 6 months for second time with cervical foramenal stenosis

Hi, I’m awaiting a second scan for possible Vestibular Scwannanoma. Been suffering with vertigo and issues for 14yrs and was put down to a car crash. In the last 12mths had increase in many symptoms, including visual and cognitive. I’ve been teaching for 21yrs. I’m 44, and wondering how long I’ll have left if VS is confirmed. What happens when you retire on ill health on your pension. Is it a hugely decreased rate due to retiring early? Have you found it difficult teaching?

Sorry to hear about your symptoms. The Teachers Ill Health Retirement pension would mean, from my understanding, that you would be able to claim your pension early with a possible enhancement to make up for the lost working years. Apparently it is difficult to get.

My union have been really helpful, so it might be worth contacting your union.

Wishing you all the best for the future

Hi Paul, I’m also a teacher and I’ve recently been diagnosed with a heart condition. I hoped that you might be able to let me know if you have been successful with your ill health pension application and how you have found the process. Any advice would be much appreciated.
