My mum had brain surgery back in 1991 for a schwannoma/acoustic neuroma. Her hearing was affected but as she's got older her hearing in that ear has significantly deteriorated.
Mum is sure that she cannot have a hearing aid due to the surgery but I'm wondering if technology has advanced and if anyone with a similar issue has successfully had a hearing aid and what type it is?
Thanks.

hi I haven’t had surgery yet but already had a conversation with audiologist as I have already tried a hearing aid without success. She said post surgery it will be worth looking at a cross hearing aid it involves wearing an aid in each ear and your good ear transmit the sound to your deaf ear. Worth looking into. Good luck
Hi I had surgery for AN last year. Left deaf in one ear with continuous tinnitus. Wearing CROS aids help enormously transferring sound into hearing ear and masking the tinnitus. There is hope.
Thank you, I appreciate you taking the time to reply and pleased to hear it has helped you. I had a quick look online, did you see a specialist or order directly from their website? Does the hearing aid sit behind the ear as mum doesn't think she can have anything placed there.
I was referred to audiology by my Consultant on diagnosis of AN. After pretty extensive testing I was supplied with ordinary Phonak hearing aids. Post surgery and losing hearing on right side I was fitted for CROS aids again by the NHS who contacted me . Yes they fit behind the ear. I too was sceptical at first but with a bit of perseverance they have proved excellent..
hi if she has the hearing nerve in tact in both ears then yes she can have hearing aid. If she lost it in one ear but remained with hearing in one ear then only that one ear can have a useable aid in.
I only have single sided deafness ( hearing only in my left ear)
I use an apple air pod pro that has conversation boost and helps me a lot , works far better than cross aids I was provided.
Hi sounds as though your Mum needs to be seen at Audiology they will advise what’s available and suitable for her, depending where you are you may be able to self refer so give your local hospital audiology department a ring and see if not she’ll need a referral from the GP. Hope she gets some help
