I sleep way too much: night time, long naps during the day when I can, fall asleep on the bus.

I'm trying to work out if this is a continued symptom of depression. I was diagnosed at 19, and since used a combination of medication, diet and exercise and just being honest about what's happening to try and get through it. I have always had a problem with my sleep though. Whilst there are times when I do not sleep and cannot sleep, most of the time I find it's the other way around. Even if I get a good nights sleep, I'm tired throughout the day. I doze on the bus quite a lot, and if I do have a nap I cannot have a 20 minute nap as is recommended; I usually sleep 2-3 hours if I nap and I simply cannot wake up if I'm having one. I may open my eyes but I just have to go back to sleep. This doesn't affect my sleep at night, as I'm tired out by the end of the day anyway. Is this just me sleeping too much, or is this a continued symptom?

Hi Lotte

I'm wondering whether you have been referred to a sleep clinic? I had similar problems and found it really helpful. Your GP can refer you.

The other thing that comes to mind is whether you have any idea why you are depressed, in other words do you know when you first started to feel low. I'm asking because sometimes problems that start in childhood affect sleep quite badly, I know my own sleep problems and depression were caused by having a really unhappy childhood which left some post-traumatic stress type reactions and I'm just wondering whether that might apply to you.
