Hi. I don't know where to start really. I joined here last year or the year before I can't really remember. I am 65 and due to retire in June but I feel so down about my weight. I have put on 3 stone in the last couple of years and I'm finding it so hard to lose that I give up. I thought I would give it another go because I am sick of feeling like this and none of my clothes fit. My daughter is getting married at the end of the year and I want to look and feel better by then. I am going to try the SW eating plan as I have lost on that before. I know it's harder to lose it when you get older, everybody keeps telling me that. I just want to feel better about myself but I keep thinking what s the point.

You have done the hard bit…made a decision to get that weight under control. You have the best incentive…your daughter’s wedding! Don’t believe what they say about it being harder to lose as you age…I am 66 and the weight does come off if you stick to the plan or calorie allowance. It can be harder to stay active as you age if you have arthritis or other ailments, but those also might improve with loss of the excess weight. Try thinking one day at a time. If you have a bad day, as happens (I know from experience), put it behind you and start the next day by planning your meals, chucking out the tempting junk food and scroll through EBay looking at the Mother of The Bride outfits! My best incentive when my son got married was meeting up with my ex. who had gained 3 stone…and I had lost mine at that time…a smug feeling. However, my weight has lately started to creep back on, so I am right here again, struggling alongside you! We have got to do it, for the sake of our health if nothing else.
Hi Cantbeasked it's great to see you back. How eciting to have a wedding to look forwards to. Weight loss can be difficult when we get older,if that's how we take it. I've lost 10 Kg (just over 1 and a half stone) I'm 68 this year and I can't exercise enough to make it count.
I'm sure that you can remember your way around but if you can't I suggest that you begin at the pinned posts. Just click on the link below, scroll down until you find a post which interests you, click on the title to open the post. If you want to see another one just start again.

As always we find that participation is the key to success. The Daily Diary and the weekly Weigh In are very good places to begin.
May I suggest that you set yourself smaller goals 1-2 lbs a week is far more achievable than looking at 3 stone.
Good luck 🍀
Thanks TabbyCat. I think exercise is the problem, I try to avoid it but I go for a walk but not enough to make a difference. I will probably start the weekly weigh in tomorrow.
Exercise is good but apparently makes you fitter rather than slimmer - "you can't outrun a bad diet" I lost my weight as mentioned in another reply, without changing the amount of exercise (treadmill) that I already did every day - I never did manage to get those endorphins to kick in that are supposed to make you want to exercise more 🤣
Good luck, taking control over what you eat us the first step, the exercising will come, but make sure your happy with future choices you make whatever it's todo with, so to reduce the stress level you have at the mo over the 42lb increase in your weight. Have a good month/week, we are all impatient, get a grip on that and build your confidence by taking small steps to start with, and identify foods that you cannot resist, reduce it eliminate for the time being Within a week you may start to feel physically better if your happy with the result .
My friend has two days a week when she skips breakfast and then eats two low cal meals for lunch and dinner and has lost a stone over the last six months - worth a try maybe
Hi can’tbeasked, sorry to read you are feeling down about your weight, I do think for some people it’s harder to loose weight as we get older, but not impossible. I see you have decided to try SW, that’s good that you have made a decision to have another go. I’m sure if you persevere you will soon be loosing some weight. I would also say do as tabbycat suggested and break down the amount of weight you want to loose into manageable sizes. look at just loosing 7 pounds, I personally don’t think you need to set a time limit just make 7 lbs your target then when you achieve this set another goal. Good luck, I hope to see you pop up on one of the weigh ins . 😁
Hi sun0. I will join tomorrow's weigh in and like you say just look at losing 7lb first. I've done it before so I should be able to do it again. I don't want to carry on feeling like this do so have to do something.
Aw I’m so pleased to read that, I haven’t decided on how much I want to loose it sort of takes the pressure away. I’m just looking at my next 7 pounds. I have wavered in the last two weeks but I’m just going to keep trying. If you read some other peoples post it might just motivate you , that’s what I have been doing. Good luck for tomorrow .
Hi Cantbeasked I feel the same, I’m 63 and have low energy, the littlest bit of exercise/activity wears me out, I know my weight is not helping, I vow to start every Monday but that soon goes out of the window. I’m about 3.5 stone overweight and hate myself for letting it get this bad. We need to do it for our health and I don’t want to get to my retirement in a couple of years and give up completely, I want to be active then so I can enjoy it. Do you know the link to join tomorrow’s weigh-in ? I will weigh in tomorrow and hopefully we can help each other along the way 🙂

Hi Eam2010 That's what I do start every Monday but finish by Tuesday. I've weighed myself this morning and just about to enter it on today's weigh in. I've tried to start today with a positive attitude and reading all the lovely comments has helped.
Hi Can't be a'd - yes you can be! I was well over 60 when I started my latest downward weight journey. I abandoned all previous ideas of calorie counting and low fat foods and tried an alternate that I hadn't heard of LCHF - low carbohydrates and healthy fats, It certainly worked for me, getting rid of my hangry times between meals and craving for sugar, and I also found my "off switch" again to know when to stop eating. During lockdown I have fallen back into bad habits and the sugar monster is after me again so I'm now trying to get back on track before Iregain all that I lost. It's worth doing!
Hi PandQs, my downfall is sweet things. Once I get the taste thats it I can't stop. I've tried calorie counting but it's not for me so I'm hoping to stick to the SW plan but not go to the group's I 've had enough of that.
If you are interested in theory behind LCHF please look at a series of short videos "The Skinny on Obesity" also a lecture online called HOPE by a Southport GP Dr David Unwin (it's aimed at people with type 2 diabetes but also interesting for anyone addicted to sugar) and a website Fatismyfriend by a GP from Warrington Dr Joanne McCormack. Totally different from how I remember my SW and WW days, but perhaps a radical new approach is what you need if you've been yo-yoing like I was
Hi Cantbeasked
I started on the slimming world plan.( if that what SW is) it got me started last year. Lost a stone and now just I look at what I eat and the portion size. Limit the snacks and alcohol but still have treats. Don't give up like others have said take it a few pounds at a time. Age does play its part but you can do this and look stunning for your daughters wedding 👍🥂
Good luck x
The fact that everyone responds to you is so needed. The whole subject matter "out there", remains so private...secretive. Generally if I bring up the subject, my own struggle even casually, it's dismissed or diminished. For me my long standing relationship with food IS the issue. In a poem I wrote I called it "the monkey on my back". casacera
Hi Cantbeasked,I just want to wish you all the best on your weight loss journey. I too have rejoined and know how difficult it is to lose weight but it can be done! Heres to a happy healthy future
😀
While you can (and have already proved) that you can lose weight on the SW eating plan, it relies on calorie restriction which is very difficult to maintain long term as you've found out. I am 68 and found it no problem to lose weight and keep it off on a LCHF diet which does not depend on counting calories but controls what you eat, ie no refined sugars or starches like white bread and pasta. You can eat any amount of fat you like as long as it's not refined seed oil which causes oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. My BMI is 21.
