What do people mean when they say they've done 14.8 or 12.10 ?

What do you mean
I think it means they are fasting for 14 hrs and eating in a window of 6 hrs.
Hope this helps Basten. 😊
Why not ask them on the Diary?
Sorry I dont get on with finding half the stuff on here re what people eat and which diet they do unless I read up their history. May be easy for you and ma y but not me
I assume you found the Diary as you've seen people refer to 14:10 etc. If anything interests you, just reply as you have done to me, here. Everyone will be happy to answer your questions.
I've never bothered looking at people's diet histories. I just read what they're planning for the day and pinch ideas if I fancy them and they fit in with my approach.
I did a post to precisely answer those questions.
I don't think it's pinned 😔
I've seen 14:10 as the woman version of 16:8 but never seen 12:10. Here's one link healthline.com/nutrition/6-...
Sorry, what??
Most of us are women on here. There is no "women's version". There is just what we do.
And plenty of us fast for way longer than 16 hours.
If you follow the link I posted it says "It’s generally recommended that women only fast 14–15 hours because they seem to do better with slightly shorter fasts." (than the 16:8) no offence meant, I've seen it somewhere else as well.
Well, I saw that in the link now. It did not have a reference. It seems like sexist nonsense. If you have a link to studies that show that women should fast shorter than men, then please share. I have watch a few videos debunking women fasting for shorter periods than men. I have never watch the original videos they were debunking.
But either way, if a woman is fasting for 14 hours, she is not doing the distaff version of 16:8. She is doing 14:10.
Men can also fast for 14 hours. It doesn't make them women doing 16:8. It makes them people doing 14:10.
I have fasted for longer than 60 hours on at least 3 occasions. My oestrogen did not affect the clock. An hour was still an hour.
Ha. I'm a bloke with a preference for 14:10. I can have breakfast and I understand the benefits are essentially the same.
Well, this is a can of worms. I found an article on dofasting.com/blog/14-10-in... which includes the summary "It is more suitable for beginners. Most importantly, experts recommend intermittent fasting schedule 14:10 for women before they start doing the 16:8 method. This is crucial because going long hours without food can affect a woman’s menstrual cycle." but provides nothing to back it up.
medicalnewstoday.com/articl... just has a bare "During the 16:8 diet, men fast for 16 hours each day, and women fast for 14 hours."
marksdailyapple.com/women-a... goes into a more detailed analysis but doesn't really give a 14:10 for women and 16:8 for men answer.
I can see why you get irritated by these throwaway platitudes
16:8 14:10 .....all cobblecook talk still to me. My friend is 76 active slim. If she puts on just 4lbs shell have breakfast no lunch dinner or no breakfast lunch and dinner. Shes christian and has done fasts. I think it all each one is unique. What works for one wont another etc. . I've yet to get started on anything as I wont weigh myself yet just know I'm fat. Read sooooo much on here but that's about it so far. Just cant get motivated to start and sugar cravings very bad still so until I can get over that ........!!!
Longer fasts may have some benefits, but as you put it, it's 'cobblecook' to me too. The main benefit I gain is it's simply a psychological incentive not to have naughty nibbles of an evening. I don't like to be hungry and a 14:10 pattern fits in with that.
Hey Basten, I am following your struggles. I hope you find a way that inspires you.
Your friend sounds naturally healthy. The rest of us are having to use tricks to try to get our bodies to behave the way they would have if we'd grown up before industrialisation.
Have I suggest you look at Bitten Jonsson? I watched a video of hers that convinced me that sugar addiction is real - and that I didn't have it. I wonder if you are addicted.
Big hug, and I hope you find your path.
I don't think you will get over your sugar cravings until you DO start on something. I would suggest reading about the effect sugar and other carbs - potatoes, bread, pasta have on insulin production in the body. For me, making the change to eat things that didn't require insulin to process, overcame my sugar cravings in a very short time (LCHF diet). I keep recommending Dr Robert Lustig's videos so often I must sound like a broken record, but for you I'd suggest in particular episode 4 of the series The Skinny on Obesity: Sugar - a Sweet Addiction
I have a question. When people fast for a long period of time, are there any provisos that people include eg water?
There are such things as dry fast (no water) and hard, dry fasts (no cleaning teeth or bathing!!!), but they are extreme. I'd even classify them as eating disorders.
I typically drink black coffee and tea whilst fasting, as well as water - and I add salt to everything because otherwise the fluids might draw salt from my body. When I started, I allowed myself small amounts of high fat foods, eg cream in my coffee or a spoonful of a high fat cheese. Bouillon cubes made into stock, or bone broth can help too.
I have just started a practice of longer fasting once a month. I am just taking water and salt. I am finding that physiologically fine, but psychologically more difficult. I don't know if that will become a lifetime practice.
It’s the number of hours of refraining from eating (fasting) and the hours of the eating window in 24hrs hence the 2 numbers will always add up to 24. It’s intermittent fasting.
You will often see 16/8 which is 16hrs no food and 8hrs in which to eat. Or 20/4 which is 20hrs fasting and 4hrs in which to eat. 18/6 is 18hrs fasting, 6hrs eating window. There is even 23/1!
Oh thanks you explained that very well. I think I should try that as I snack terribly .
If you are of the vintage from the ‘50’s like me, you will have had three meals a day, breakfast, dinner, tea, and not eaten anything else in between your tea and breakfast the next morning. Some people call that fasting. I just call it not eating between meals! 😊
Exactly. Most people just aren't eating proper meals because they think they have to "control their portions". So of course they snack.
True !!
