Nhs calorie allowance

Hi all! I’ve found out about this group via the couchto5k group and figured it would be the perfect accompaniment :)

I’m pretty massively overweight and currently weigh 22 at 5lb - I’ve worked out my calories on the NHS calculator and it reckons I need to be eating between 2200 and 2800 a day even if I want to lose weight! This seems like an awful lot for and I’m struggling to find ways of eating enough healthy food to fill the requirements. I should also say that I’m aiming to get down to 11 stone so I’m well aware this is going to a blooming long journey!

I also use MFP and that reccomend a 1800kcal so I’m really not sure which is correct 😂 has anyone else been given a pretty large allowance? TIA x

It may be a long journey but is absolutely achievable. I'm sure someone will be along with some useful links presently.

I found it was more about which foods I ate (and which I didn't) than precisely how many calories. But you'll see the various diet options and useful forums to use as you settle in.

Good luck with your journey.

Hello and welcome Hidden

The main difference between MFP and the NHS calorie range is that MFP allows you to ‘earn’ back calories for exercise whereas the NHS already allows for this. Personally I’d go with the NHS guide, but also look at what you’re eating, moderate carbs, (as low as you can realistically go) lots of green vegetables and salads, and don’t be afraid of fat, olive oil, nuts dairy etc as these will fill you up without triggering insulin (which is what makes us store fat in the first place) For more help with food choices have a look at the Daily Diary

If you haven't already taken it, here's a tour of the forum healthunlocked.com/?tour to help you find your way around. I’d start with Pinned Posts, especially the Welcome Message. Have a good look around but please ask if you have any questions

Best wishes in your weight loss journey

Indigo 😊

I'm steadily losing weight using MFP calorie allowance (1530 a day) and I can eat more on days when I exercise (which is anywhere between 4 and 7 days a week) if I want to.

NHS recommends that I eat between 1775-2283 calories a day, and on exercise days I am not far off the lower end of that scale at times. Pretty sure that before I began trying to lose weight I only ate around 2000 calories a day or less on average (without the exercise), and that made me gain weight, so I certainly won't be aiming for 2283.

It's just finding what works best for you - if you can lose weight on the NHS allowance, who wouldn't want to eat more food 😂 The main thing is that you're not feeling deprived/hungry all the time.

Good luck for your weight loss journey, I look forward to hearing how you're getting on :)
