Hi there, I'm Molly and joined this site because I need to lose a lorra weight and need encouragement. I am 70 and weigh 17 stone - mainly through being very inactive, boredom picking and obviously overeating! I have started this diet last week using calorie count and trying to do 10,000 steps a day (which is quite hard).
On my weigh in yesterday I had lost 3 lbs so am keen to keep on losing 2-3 lbs a week. My initial goal is 1 stone and once I achieve that I will go onto another goal of 1 stone
I think that your aim for a 2 - 3lb loss per week is over-ambitious and unsustainable. Weight loss is rarely linear and 1 - 2lbs a week is a more realistic and healthy goal. I would also suggest breaking your goals into smaller increments too, maybe half stones.
As we age, we often find it more difficult to process carbs, so you may find this interesting healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

When I started to lose weight for my 70th birthday I was about 19½ stone - and I have lost over 4 stone - mostly at one pound a week. Weight lost slowly is easier to keep off.
I started trying to walk 10,000 steps a day... but it was too much - and I now walk 30 or 40 Km per week. (I was disabled for about half a decade.)
What works for many of us here is the Low-Carbohydrate (LCHF) diet (see the forum here on Health Unlocked) and Not Eating All day) AKA Intermittent Fasting. See:
Thanks for you advice although the fasting diet wouldn't be good for my body as my doctor recommend small meals throughout my day, but, I am looking at the LCHF one
Does your doctor not believe in Intermittent fasting... or do you have a condition that makes it not advisable for you?
I have no gall bladder, so one or two meals a day of Low-Carbohydrate High-Fat would not suit me (the gall bladder stores bile to digest large, fatty meals) so I do moderate-carbs, moderate-fat.
I haven't asked to be honest. He just recommended eater smaller meals and getting more exercise. I do have high blood pressure and cholesterol but not sure whether fasting would affect either or whether I would "take" to it
Good luck on your journey, Molly. Try to aim for 1-2lbs a week weight loss. I know losing weight often feels very urgent and you want to shed pounds as quickly as possible but a steady weight loss of between 1-2lbs a week will have a much much much higher chance of staying off than rapid weight loss. Expect a big drop the first week or so, then it will (and should) slow down to 0.5-2lbs a week.
Cool, thanks for your advice ! I was so excited to lose that first 3 lbs but can see not to expect it every week. I use myfitnesspal to calculate my calories and also record my exercise bouts
Unfortunately my hobbies of knitting and reading don't help ! Today wasn't so bad I reached my 10,000 steps goal, but yes I hope the exercise gets easier. The calorie counting isn't so bad
