Hi, I have been told by my doctor that I should lose one and a half stone as I have high cholesterol and increase my excercise. I'm mid 50's,post menopausal,a size 12 and in the healthy BMI range.
I would like to know if other people have tried the NHS diet plan. I really don't want to join a slimming club. Thanks.

Hi Sulfate and welcome to this forum. In Nov 17 I started on the NHS 12 week plan which I tweaked towards the end. Now I have lost just over 4 st. But have actually halved my cholesterol much to the delight of my GP. My blood pressure has also come down. I am now 67, was in the obese range and wearing size 22 clothes. I am now wearing size 14 clothes. I used the 12week plan as the basis for my new healthy lifestyle...not a diet this weight s for life. I too joined WW and Slimming World lost a stone then put it all back on and more. My husband and I ended up eating different meals but now we have exactly the same most evenings except he doesn’t like fish which I swap for something else or him. I count calories and write everything down. One of the admin team will explain a few things to you such as checking your BMI and working within the calorie range suggested. I work at on 1400 calories per day which suits me . Those are spread out over the day according to the suggestion in the 12 week plan . It does work and the support you get from this forum is better than any slimming club as members here are available 24/7. So all the best to you in your quest to lower your cholesterol and hope 2019 proves a good year for you. 🥰🥰🥰
Many people here use the 12 week plan - if this is the route you choose to follow, please use the NHS BMI calculator to work out your own personal calorie range. The 1400 calories you will see that they mention, is not correct for all of us.

Hi Sulfate I too am in the same boat as you with high cholesterol which was 7.3 after losing one and a half stone which took me a year not on nhs diet but just by going to Yoga classes 3 times a week and not eating junk. I have lapsed a bit and ideally want to lose another stone by April. Remember high cholesterol can lead to heart disease and stroke. Don t think of it as being on a diet but a lifestyle change. I think of it as eating junk like sweets cake etc is no longer an option. Good luck . My first week on NHS diet and I have lost a pound.
