Can ''Traces of nuts'' in cereals trigger an allergic reaction?

Hi everyone,

I recently found out that I am allergic to peanuts, coconuts and even trees.

For most of my life I have suffered from itchy skin which often lasts for up to a week before it calms down.

I also find that before the itching starts my face breaks out in pus filled spots on the bridge of my nose and on the cheeks of my face.

I wonder if that is linked to my allergies?

I try to be careful so as to avoid eating food that will trigger an allergic reaction but its hard.

I am find that most cereals have ''traces of nuts'' and I wonder if that is enough to set my skin off again?

I eat a bowl of cereal with ''traces of nuts'' about 3 weeks ago and my skin has been irritated ever since.

It is driving me to despair because I'm having to sleep with hardly anything on my body and of course I feel cold plus my skin itches non stop and I can't sleep.

I'm due to see a dermatologist in February and I hope that I'll finally understand what is causing my skin to flare up and what I can do to stop it.

I long for my skin to be calm with no itching and to be able to put on clothes without making it worse.

I would appreciate some feedback

thanks.

It could well be the cereal . . . I would avoid it if you can. I’m not a fan of cereal anyway, prefer eggs or fruit and yogurt 😊

Things have been challenging especially on the food front

but I try to take things a step at a time and I feel very much better from the helpful advice I received today.

How have things been for you?

It can take only a small trace of nuts to produces an acute reaction.

"Traces of nuts" is very unspecific:

"They" cannot state that a food is "nut free" if it is produced in a facility that uses nuts... but a batch may or may not contain (traces of) nuts.

Hi fatn51,

I cant advise but I can certainly empathise. I have lymphoedema and eczema, it took 14 months to diagnose and I was prescribed loads of different potions and lotions.

I have a wet room fitted as I have widespread arthritis. One nurse suggested I soak in the bath. Was she really concentrating? However I know all about her daughters journey with psoriasis.

My skin is paper thin and tears easily, when it bleeds I look like a stuck pig. Some of my lesions tear when I move, eg get up off a chair or take off clothing; would that I could survive naked.

All I can do is wash and moisturise and moisturise and moisturise.

Obvious thing to check is soaps shampoos etc and the biggy is washing powder/ detergent.

I hope you skin specialist is good and can help you. It might help if you keep a food diary running alongside any symptoms?

Cheers Scouse
