My first week following the NHS plan and have put on 1.1/2 lb. I'm not happy. I have been using the Lose it app to record all my food intake and have used a Fitbit and app to record my steps. Do you think I need to see my GP? I take a fair bit of medication for R.A. and with a BMI of over 35, I need to take charge of my weight. I really do want to change, I stopped smoking 16 weeks ago and have decreased my coffee intake to 5 cups a da and increased my water to 1.5 litres a day.

Hi F-Mcf,

It's never a bad idea to have the OK from your GP, when embarking on a weight loss programme, however, don't be too hasty. It does take a while to get into the swing of things and for our bodies to respond to the changes.

Have you got your calorie allowance from the NHS BMI calculator?

Are you adding back the exercise calories, that your Fitbit is offering?

Have you checked the side-effects of your medication, to see whether weight gain in one of them.

If you've cut back on caffeine, that could have slightly reduced your metabolism.

Smoking alters metabolism and the cessation can frequently result in weight gain.

You need to be patient and cover all bases. I would also encourage you to join the Daily Diary, so that we can see what your menu plans look like and can then offer advice.

Hi fatty...lol. love the name.

I know how you feel , it's really disheartening. I have struggled to lose weight for years and I don't understand . I went to s.world with my best friend and she would lose 4lb a week and I would lose a lb a fortnight if I was lucky. Since Xmas I have lost a stone ,( but that includes the extra rubbish I pigged out on all over the Xmas week) . Some of the things I've changed for me ,is making sure I have breakfast which is normally a sachet of porridge with s,/s milk and a handful of sultanas or any fruit. Or poached eggs etc. I use to go without breakfast and sometimes lunch because I didn't feel like it and would then think it ok to eat more calories at night plus treat myself to a few vodka and tonics which obviously didn't work. I have also started the couch to 5 k on my treadmill which I thought was going to kill me when I started but I have persevered and am starting to do a lot better.

I just want to say , Dont give up .... Don't stand on the scales daily ... and don't give in to temptation if you put a lb on..... if you have been good then that extra lb might just be water and next week you will lose that plus an extra lb..... keep going and good luck.

I know from experience how dispiriting it is when your body doesn't do what you think it should. Managing our bodies is a big topic and like anything complex, it will take time to become proficient.

Everything moreless says makes sense... like starting off with NHS BMI calculator (if you haven't already run it)

You've done really well to quit smoking for so long and clearly have an inner strength.

Good luck!
