Dissopointment.

Well what a blow, I had an appointment with my consultant yesterday, and proudly walked into his room 3 and a half stone lighter since February this year, I wasn't congratulated just told to lose more and get my BMI down to under 35 it is now 37.2 as they would not consider me for a new knee op unless I did. I must lose another 3 stone, I have really worked at my weight this year and staying under the 1500 cals I allow myself daily, sometimes less, always eating healthily and cutting out all snacks, admittedly it is slow going at the moment 1 to 2 lbs a week, but,hey always going in the right direction hopefully, the consultant has put me down for the op in January 2018 so I have until then to achieve my weight loss ( I wouldn't mind but he himself looked well over the 20 stone mark !!!) anyway I must get my BMI down so any helpful tips ie daily diary would be most appreciated. I am also due to have a hernia op in November but so far no mention of my BMI. All I can say is thank you so much for all your support without it I would not be so much lighter xx

Oh no, lathe! No wonder you were disappointed!! I'm gutted for you!

Well done for not throwing in the towel, but stiffening your resolve to keep moving forward! :)

I'm concerned that you've been restricting your calories to less than 1500, though, as that is too low for your BMI and may make losing more, difficult. I would advise a period of maintenance, to reset your body and reading this will make things clearer for you :)

healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

I hope you'll continue to log your menu plans on the Daily Diary and would urge you to join one of our weigh-in's for support and encouragement.

Wishing you every success :)

Another 3 stone lighter and your knees might not hurt any more! I had a very painful knee at my heaviest but I can run up the stairs on it now... Depends if you have any permanent damage I suppose? Good luck with your efforts so far and stick with it...you will feel so much better in the long run, and will of course need to spend less time being lectured by toffee-nosed consultants!

Well done you've done brilliantly 👍 and keep up with the fab work as giving yourself better health is the best gift you will ever have.❤️

I have found too that some people never say you've lost weight I think they may think I'm ill or something so don't want to be rude lol😢

My GP too only said well done when I actually said I'd lost so much weight I guess it didn't say anything on the screen in my notes lol😊

Can i just say well done you have done fantastic like the other person said losing another 3 stone you might not even need the knee operation

xxxxx

lathe profile image
lathe in reply to

Thanks, Freya, but the knee is now bone on bone the cartlidge has worn away, so I definitely need the op, and I have fallen down a couple of times as it gives way now and again !!

in reply tolathe

awww right mine the same i have to walk with a walker now but my weight is really bad i was just thinking as you lose the weight it might just help like you am trying so hard but its not easy

lathe profile image
lathe in reply to

I too use a walker and it is a Godsend as I cannot walk far at all, I do daily do my use it or lose it chair exercises, which are really helpful in my trying to remain as active as I can, would love to try swimming but worry in case I can not climb in or out of the pool, also I would be embarrassed , ME in a swimsuit !! ugh doesn't bare thinking about.

Well done on your loss so far and not letting rubbish comments from the doctor derail you.

Ask your local pool about a hoist to get in and out of the pool. I used one when I was recovering from a broken ankle as I couldn't bend the ankle- that's why I needed to swim to get the mobility back. I sat in a chair they lower you in and when you've finished they just reverse this. No steps or climbing.

I'd say particularly as it's a knee that you're waiting for the operation on it would be exactly what the hoist is designed for. Ring them up before you go and they'll talk through what they can do.

I found no one looked or was surprised in fact most times I swim I see someone hoisted in. It allows you to use the pool then. Good luck!

lathe profile image
lathe in reply toClareMcr

I will give the local health center a ring, what a good idea if they do have a hoist I would test it out first and blow what I look like in a swimming costume !! many thanks xx

Morning lathe , Shame on your consultant for being so rude and not acknowledging your achievement but at the same time good on you for doing so well on your weight loss journey. We are all here to support you and it won't be long until you are within the BMI range for your op. My husband had his in February and it has made a huge difference to his mobility as he also has MS to contend with. Wishing you well on the rest of your journey.😊

That sounds like a cruel response to your fantastic efforts. Th weight loss is ultimately for you not for your consultant. Hope you can manage to get it reduced to your goal ready for your operation.

Keep using the forum to spur you on.

Will do, as I love the feedback and helpful tips and hints and mostly support I gain from you lovely folk out there on this forum xx

Hi lathe

Congrats on having lost 3 1/2 stone since February ... Well done!

I completely get what you're saying about your achievements not being acknowledged by certain Drs. I recall one Dr's appointment when I was told I had to lose weight. (This was a big deal the way he was talking about it). I returned several months later 1_1/2 stone lighter ... and he didn't even refer to it! 😠

You're doing brilliantly well, and you will get all the recognition you deserve for your fab weight loss on here!

Keep going! 😀

lathe profile image
lathe in reply toNeedtodosomething

Thank you so much for your positive feedback xx

You're doing so well. Keep it up!

lathe your consultant was probably jealous of your amazing weight loss! He might not have said well done, but we all do! And 1-2lb per week isn't slow, although as you get nearer goal it might slow down a bit yet, but it is certainly a sustainable weight loss, and you should be very proud. I'm confident you can get the next three stone off. Brilliant achievement!

Well done to you. I know how annoying the cut back to yourself would have hurt as I have had another type of cut back with the NHS. I had to lose weight and be under 30bmi to be able to have ivf. When I went to my appointment after getting my bmi under 30 I was so happy thinking I would get ivf and maybe get a final chance to have children as I was told this was the reason I couldn't have it. At the actual appt I was told I still couldn't have it because my I have to many eggs to start with. Before I was told my eggs are too small so had to go for ivf. I just burst into tears and felt like everything has been for nothing but I am a fighter and am fighting still with this and getting to have another type of test in case they took the test at the wrong time because my periods are never 28 days apart they always are less. Don't give up. You have done brilliant so far. You will get there but I do agree about looking at how many calories to eat to be able to lose weight. It does tell you the amounts to have for losing weight, so use it for this. All the best.

lathe please don't feel disappointed, you have done incredibly well and should be proud of what you have lost so far. I had a similar situation a few months back when I went to see my GP having lost two stone, I have to admit though the rebel in me didn't let it bother me and just looked at him and said silently in my head "what an a##e"

You are doing well don't let anyone take that away from you.

I originally lost the weight because of doctor advice too - I had a bmi of 29.5 but had high blood pressure, digestive issues, was generally unwell. I remember being told to lose weight by people significantly heavier than me, just 2 stone made the difference in the end. I appreciate many on here have bigger journeys than that. But I totally understand your indignation! But also I agree with above comments - we're not doing this for any doctors, it's for ourselves. And there are so many great moments along the way, it sounds like now is a good point to celebrate :)

Hi Ruth, you are so right about the plus's along the way, my biggest plus was purchasing a sexy bra two sizes smaller than I used to, WoW I felt the bis!! and now dropped two dress sizes down. Thanks for your support Ruth as you say it is not for other people we aim to lose weight, I'm hoping this is a whole new lifestyle of healthy eating and not a diet.

I really despair at the bedside manner of GPs and most of their receptionists. Rather than quell your achievement with negativity, why not just congratulate you on your success thus far, and step off that moral high ground, upon which so many of them feel they are deserving! My knees still creak and groan but they don’t hurt anymore, so keep going and good luck!!

You have done really well to lose the weight you have. Do not get despondent over the comments made by your consultant, some of whom are not the most sensitive of persons. He does have your best interests at heart though and although it is a difficult pill to swallow, remember you are half way there and how much better in yourself will you feel when you achieve your goal. I have lost 4stone going from class 2 obese down to overweight. So feeling thrilled I checked my desired weight on nhs. I was shocked to find I need to lose another 4 stone just to be mid range!! Ridiculous I would be like a walking skeleton. I think I weighed more than that when I was born🤣. Good luck on your quest, you can do it. Keep yr mind fixed on the task and I’m sure all will be well.

Hi Lathe I joined this group a week ago after a hospital phone call which left me feeling like I had been punched in the stomach. I should've been having back surgery this Monday just gone at a Nuffield hospital as an NHS patient. They have already cancelled it twice. I went for my pre-op last week and nothing was said to me. Then I get a phone call from the nurse who was so rude at the pre-op and she said they had contract with NHS everyone knew about it and your BMI must be 36 mine is 40 so operation off! I was devastated and asked how much I need to lose she snapped 'lots' how does that help? My GP says it is because they don't have an ITU if things go wrong and I am higher risk which I understand but nobody told me in 6 months of visits I am too fat.

Well this week I lost 3 pounds so my journey has begun. Good luck to you. You have done so well.

Hello To you, and thanks so much for your positive input, well done on a 3lb weight loss this week, it's really great to exchange views and opinions on things, as regards to your hospital visit I was shocked to discover IBM now appears to count for so much, which is all new to me !!My visit was to a Spire hospital which is private, but I was NHS patient (wonder if that makes any difference to the Consultants attitude. Still, my attitude is onwards and downwards and roll on Jan when hopefully I have my knee replacement & my BMI is spot on !!

Needpositivity profile image
Needpositivity in reply tolathe

I was shocked about BMI too. My consultant didn't say anything about my weight in the four times I've seen him. My GP says it is because it is a private hospital. I too am an NHS patient. What can you do, just try our best to lose weight.

Good luck for January
