Hello to Annie,
I was diagnosed with pre diabetes on 29 June and that galvanised me into action. I was overweight by nearly 3 stone and been taking medication for hypertension since for nearly 20 years.
I researched the internet as I knew nothing about diabetes and came across D Michael Moseleys 8 week blood sugar diet book and the recipe book for it written by his wife who is a GP and a nutritionist both books full of excellent information( buy on Amazon cheKy). Dr Mosekey was diagnosed Type 2 and reversed the condition by doing the diet which has been clinically proved by Prof Hill of Newcastle University .
The book explains it is the visceral fat around your organs which stops your production of insulin and its absorption. If you get rid of that fat your organs recover.
I followed this diet and increased activity for 8 weeks and lost 12% of my body weight . Miraculously my blood pressure reduced and a blood test showed my blood sugar returned to normal . I am continuing to lose weight and I total have now lost nearly 14 kg down from size 16 to between 14 and 12. I have another 6 kg to lose.
So in short you can turn things round with calorie control avoiding high G I carbs and fruit and increasing activity.
I hope this inspires you to get cracking on the task of losing weight and improving your health
All good wishes
Hi thanks for your reply ,i did buy this book from Amazon, but like all other slimming books it has ended up in a drawer..I will get it out and give it another go...I really need to get to grips with how serious diabetes is...
Hi and best wishes. I want to concur with everything pcrw says regarding the blood sugar diet😂 I've signed up for a 12 week online course and having great success. I signed up after reading the book. Dig it out of the drawer and have a look.
Hi pcrw you have inspired me to get my books out and leave them where i can pick them up when i need a reminder of why i need to change my diet/exercise. I will keep you posted on my journey.x
I did just that
Left it by the bed and reread bits every night
Fell asleep looking forward to making the change the next day
I think the first 3 chapters hammer it home . You must do something about it
Well done ttannie on posting here. Looking forward to hearing more about your progress.
A low carb diet is the only one that's ever worked for me. My mum is a Type 2 Diabetic so we try to eat minimal carbs, hoping it could improve her health.
Personally, in about 11/12 weeks I've lost 39lbs total, which I believe is evidence that a low carb diet works if you stick to it.
I also HATE running so have been walking instead - 3-5 times a week I go for a brisk hours walk, along with some gym time. Don't underestimate the value of walking, it isn't so high impact but still burns calories.
Good luck, I hope you have success on a low carb lifestyle!
Hi, i know it worked for my hubby too..but he had quite a energetic job and did eat some carbs, which would scupper my efforts...I am not into fancy foods and find it difficult to know what to eat to substitute carbs...have you any tips/recipes... thanks
There are the typical alternatives: courgetti instead of pasta, cauliflower used in place of rice or mashed potato (this is useful as it means you can still eat cottage pie, fish pie etc). But what I have found makes it easier is eating LOADS of veg - not always brocolli and boiled veg but have stir fried veg or roast pepper and courgettes. Have a portion of meat or fish and basically fill yourself up on veggies.
I've found that after a few weeks, you won't find it so difficult. It's hard to explain but if I don't think about what I'm not eating then I am completely satisfied, it's only if I let my mind wander to the foods I used to love that I miss them. For example, I absolutely love pasta..having been at university for 3 years it was a key part of my diet, but now I'm here having not eaten any in 6 weeks!
There are some good books out there that have alternatives and other ideas to keep your diet interesting so that you won't get bored and give up.
Good luck!
You also need to change your mentality a bit - I used to love avocado and eggs on toast, so now I just have it without the toast. Still tastes as good, still fills me up. It's not all about the alternatives so much as removing things from your diet that you realise are unnecessary and may make you satisfied in the short term, but in fact you won't miss that much.
Aww thanks for sharing these tips with me..i suppose its about pre planning too so you dont opt for the easy options...x
Definitely plan at least a week ahead and try your best to stick to it. I'd recommend (especially now it's getting cooler) having soup in stock in the fridge so that if you don't want to cook on a day, you have a low carb meal that takes literally no time at all to prepare. Even some fresh soups will last a good few weeks in the fridge!
