Hi all. I've stumbled upon you guys whilst googling fat and 5:2! I'm 47 and hit the menopause about 18 months ago during which time I've gone from 8:5 to 10:9. I realize that may not sound much but I'm only 5:2 and was "petite" before so this is a big gain to me. It's all relative 😢 A GP appointment 2 months ago found that I now have an under active thyroid but they need to retest in 1 months time before they can start treatment. In the meantime I watch the scales climb up and my wardrobe shrink down. All despite a healthy diet. I used to run until about February but I hurt my ankle and now my archilles tendinitis is so bad that it hurts even to walk the dogs. So I swim instead. I'm so fed up. I know that I sound like I feel sorry for myself but I do! I have always been upbeat, look for the silver lining kinda gal but I feel like I'm banging my head against a brick wall. It's just keeps piling up. I will return to the doctor, I will continue with my healthy diet, I will keep doing my archilles stretches but god when will life resume to normal..... or is this my new normal!

Good luck with your first week.
Don't give up. Sounds like you enjoy being active which is half the battle. I am only an inch taller than you and the weight crept on slowly but surely until I had nearly 3 stone to lose. I have managed to rid myself of 12 KG and another 8-10kg to lose. I have done it by rigidly counting calories in and calories out and it has melted off at about 1kg a week or sometimes .5gk My greatest help has been my fit bit which shows how active I am and calculates the calories and reminds me to move if I have been sat down for too long. Once your ankle is better you will be able to get about more and swimming meanwhile will keep your muscles in good shape. I have dropped all bread, potatoes, pasta and white rice and sugar from my diet and that has made a significant difference. I understand we need more protein also as we get older because you cannot store it in your body.
You may not want to follow his diets but Dr Michael Moseley has written 2 books which explain the science of nutrition and dieting and the relative values of different foods and the effect they have on your body. I found that most helpful. age I had not realised that eating mashed potato was the equivalent to eating 4 tbsp sugar in that it boosted your blood sugar level rapidly.
So well done on you for joining this forum of support and inspiration
Hi and thanks for your reply... wow at the mash potatoes info, I never realised that either, I will be downloading those books to read. It is really frustrating gaining weight. I returned to the doctors today and was lucky enough to see a woman. She has rebooked me for a 2nd thyroid test as my T4 was pretty low last time but she has also requested a whole hormone profile be done as my weight gain has been too quick and too much. I actually cried with the relief that at last some one is listening! I'm now feeling more optimistic and I really appreciate your taking the time to post a reply to me. Good luck with your journey, you sound very disciplined and focused, I needto get a bit of that too! And well done on your success so far in x
