Excuse the huge essay I'm about to write, and if you can make it to the end of this you deserve a medal.
I am genuinely fed up with the way I look and feel. I'm only 24 years old, I've never been a healthy weight, even from a young age I was over weight. I've now jumped up to 20 stone 8lbs however this hasn't been my biggest. My biggest was 22.1 over the last three years I've slowly managed to get it down but now I'm fed up of yo-yo dieting. I started slimming world a few months ago, managed to get down to 19.5 but gave up after 6 weeks and jumped straight back up. I started a calorie controlled diet on Monday so I'm now three days in, it's going well so far, I've exercised every day, haven't exceeded my daily calorie intake and I've been eating a well balanced diet. However, with my past record I know it'll only be a matter of time where I throw in the towel and have to start all over again, I really do not want this. Not only do I want to do this for me but I want to do it for the people around me. I want to feel good in myself, I have the perfect life and this is the one thing that is holding me back. I'd love to know how to stay motivated and not give up after two bloody weeks! Any advice would be great

Hi, it's all about the mind. For more than 20 years I hovered around 20/21 stone losing a stone then giving up for some reason I don't know why. Finally I got my brain in gear when I was at my heaviest of 23 stone last September. I started to lose weight quickly by cutting out carbs in rice, bread, potato. Because I lost weight quickly I liked the results and stuck with it. It has been so worth it. I feel and look so much better. I have lost 6.5 nearly and I know I will continue. Buying smaller clothes and being more able to keep up with my husband on a day out. Don't wait 20 years for this like I did, continue now so you will have more of your life as a slimmer person. Good luck, stick with it! 🤞
Hi, I haven't gone much exercise although I do move more and wear a Fitbit. I am strict with the diet except when on holiday so then I put weight on it I start again as soon as I get back. It's easier I find to go cold turkey on the bad stuff rather than have a little bit. I don't count calories which works for me.
Well done for taking the first steps to a healthier you. Take it one day at a time. Create new habits rather than trying to change the old ones. Ask yourself what is stopping you from losing weight and do you really want to! If you are an emotional eater think about what you could do instead of eating.
As lorainesimpson said this site is a good place for motivation, people are amazing and happy to support you. Good luck ☺
I think I'm every type of eater going which is my problem. I eat when I'm bored, emotional and down to habit...My partner is exactly the same but never puts an ounce of weight on! We really enjoy everything about food, to the point where we get excited and happy that we can eat what we want but I'm really trying to break this habit!!
Hi and welcome
Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.
Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.
Have a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as many people have had success with it. Also use the BMI (can be found in the pinned Newbie post) to find your target calories, it's important to eat enough. This was a major turning point for me, realising I could eat anything I wanted as long as the calories are accounted for 😊
Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate 😊
To the right of the HOME page (bottom on a mobile), you'll find Events. In there, you'll find links to our daily Weigh-in's (you will choose just one day per week), our Daily Diary, where we post our menu and exercise plans, for accountability, advice and support - which is great to get ideas of what other people are eating and I have to confess to nicking some of their menu's and our “What's happening today” thread, where we pop in for a chat.
Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page
We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too 😊
Wishing you all the best on your weight loss journey
It's great you have made a start because the first step is the hardest. I certainly have found since cutting sugar and bread and pasta and potatoes and white race I have seen a steady reduction in weight. I eat eggs for breakfast and after a couple of days my food cravings subsided
You are exercising and that's good too. Simply by standing up every 30 mins and taking 259 steps means you will burn more calories so if you are using the computer or watching tv make sure you do this if possible. I sometimes go upstairs and come back during the adverts
There is a great book called the Fast diet which explains a lot about the impact on our bodies of eating various foods and why people find it hard to resist food. and how to change eating habits. I find it really helpful and motivating and read bits every day
This forum will provide plenty of ideas and support and you can also give others support and the benefit of your experience
Just put one foot in front of the other take it one day at a time and you will soon astonish yourself with your progress
I think I may try cutting a couple of things from my diet carb wise, I have tried a full no carb diet and lost a lot of weight but even then, I piled it all back on so maybe small changes might be an option?
Also the Fast diet is a great way. You eat the appropriate amount for 5 days and on just 2 days you go long periods of time and restrict calories to 500 for that day. Why not read the book and see whether this is a good way for you?
I think you need to make changes you can manage and can incorporate into your every day life. Make a weight loss plan and follow it through. When you feel tempted to give in to cravings divert your attention by doing something else and the craving will pass. Read a book, play your favourite music and dance around, wash and style your hair, paint your nails, go for a walk, phone a friend, post your news on this forum. Most of the time you are not really hungry and the desire to eat unnecessarily will become less frequent
