I have just joined this morning because I'm looking for help and support. I have always considered myself a confident person BUT since I turned 50+ I feel I'm losing myself. I have put on so much weight that I'm ashamed of myself and seems to be getting lazier by the day. I see some lovely clothes in the shops and I think that would look nice on me (plus it's a size 16) so it's got to fit right?? No too tight. My waist is taking over the size of my hips😵😵
I've stopped going out, don't look after myself and have just become very lazy. Can anyone advise??

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.
Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.
Take a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the NHS BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.
To the right of the HOME page (bottom on a mobile), you'll find Events. In there, you'll find links to our daily Weigh-in's (you will choose just one day per week), our Daily Diary, where we post our menu and exercise plans, for accountability, advice and support and our “What's happening today” thread, where we pop in for a chat.
Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.
We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.
It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey
So much of what you've written reminds me of myself at the beginning of this year and it can seem as if it's all too much.
Your future is much brighter than you think because you've landed here. This site is full of really helpful, knowledgeable and kind people all willing to provide you with the support you need to move forward.
Many here, including myself, follow the NHS 12 week plan which has proved to be very effective.
An admin will post lots of useful information shortly and it's well worth taking the time to go through it all in some detail as it will help you get started and it will also explain how you can use this site to give you the best chance to succeed on your journey.
Wishing you all the best and feel free to post any thoughts, feelings, questions whenever you want.
Listening to you is like listening to myself. I've just turned 48. I'm struggling with my weight too and feeling that I'm losing my sense of self. My only daughter is due to go to uni in September and I'm not sure where my place in the world is anymore. It's a very strange age to be.
So keep going, It sounds like you are doing all the right things, joining this forum, and getting support.
I've just started the C25K as well, literally W1 R1. But I have run before, do you? When I run I'm a much happier person. Doing something for yourself, being outside, and having a real sense of accomplishment.
Keep going, one step at a time. I'm a real all or nothing person. But I'm thinking 1lb a week up to Christmas and that's a couple of dress sizes.
Thank you for your response, it means a lot. I guess I've got a lot of reading to do before I get started. But I do like the idea of 1lb a week equivalent to 2 dress sizes by Christmas, that sounds good. I would love to wear a dress. Fingers crossed. 😃
Hi! And welcome to the forum!!! I so relate with what you've just said! I am 41 y.o. and for a long time my self-esteem was all the way down to my toes! Ashamed of going out, looking at nice clothes (and buying them in a size I "think" I'll fit in, but of course I don't.) and ending up buying shoes and bags, because you got to have something new! Yep, that's me. I'm always tired, unmotivated, don't want to do anything that takes me out of my hiding space, or my comfort zone.
It is really hard, especially when we become our biggest critic.
Last weekend, when I decided that I was going to embark on this weight loss journey, I started with my wardrobe. I pulled every single piece of clothing out and separated them by size (I have FIVE different sizes in my wardrobe, can you believe that?). I used an app I'd read about some time ago called Stylicious App (styliciousapp.com/) and took photos of all my clothes and separated them into sizes, and in shelves, like a shop. I found out I have so many beautiful clothes, some that I've never even worn, and I can't wait to be able to dive into the next size down shelf!
I hope that helps!
have a lovely day, and take baby steps: perhaps one meal at a time?
Thank you for your reply, it means a lot. You always feel like your the only one struggling, it would be nice if you're friends were honest and said 'its time you lost some weight because your unhappy' but they don't. All you get is 'you look con's.
Hi Peru64, I'm really lucky that my husband is very helpful in this matter. He supports me in a way that makes me feel loved, even if I'm over 100kg. Try not to let your friends's opinions (the not so honest opinions about your weight, I mean) influence you on your weight loss journey. Find an accountability partner, someone you know that is also trying to lose weight and make sure you look after each other.
1st step is being honest. Turning 50 sucks with all the changes the body/mind go through. Write it all down and go see you GP and get your surgery/practice nurse to support you. I'm now almost 63y and know exactly what you're talking about.
1st things first; you're on here with all the advice you could ask for... get some good kitchen/bathroom scales and start noting down the calorific values of what goes into your mouth. I'm loving that there are no "no-go" foods as long as its counted in my daily allowance - what a relief x
Al the best and go for it x we can do this together xx
