Does it ever become fun?

I've been trying on and off for the last few years to try and lose weight/get fit. I've had some great support from forums such as these, but i just don't seem to be able to stick with it....

The problem is that exercise has always been something that I've HAD to do, not something that I've done because I've wanted to. I rode a bicycle to school/work and only really participated in school sports because it was expected of me.

The same really applies to cooking. I was a carer for a number of years and cooking was one of the jobs that was thrust upon me due to family problems. As a result I just came to see it as nothing more than a job that needed to be done.

Unfortunately I just can't shake these habits off. I try to exercise and eat well, but I just don't to seem to be able to keep it going. Or am I going to have to find another way to force myself into a healthy way of life?

Once you see results you get enthusiastic. Every time you lose weight you feel better about yourself. I say fake it til you make it. Just do it and you will find the excitement and joy. It has to be a lifestyle change whether you like it or not. It beats being fat and feeling bad. Once I got muscle I loved working out because I could see the result. I got in better and better shape. It was exciting!

I think may be instead of forcing your self to do exercise you see as a chore, try finding something that you enjoy more? One of the hardest things about weight loss journeys is keeping motivation and having pacience. It's a slow slow story, so if you thini of like like one long film or tv series, how would you keep your self interested? You need to change it up a bit, don't fall into the trap of cooking the same or doing the same, run or treadmil or swim, make it different. May be have a 2 week rota for exercise, a red week and a blue week so one week you swim and bike may be and the next week you play football and yoga?

But most of all stop resisting, its excuses, and its fear. I know this becauee I am in this place, I have done the same. It's hard and you don't want to try hard and then fail, so you give up by not actually trying, but in fact by doing this you just failing by defeat.

So you need to fight, fight through the negativity and thoughts of i can't be bother, because you can, because you're worth it.

I started by learning to run with couch to 5k, and then lost the weight 'the hard way' - i.e. through counting calories and following the NHS 12 week plan (the only way which I think would have worked for me). But I would argue it's been fun. In the end! Read this link - note beer in hand at end of gruelling run - plus everyone's happy faces - so there's definitely some fun to be had :) healthunlocked.com/nhsweigh...

Make sure you are eating the right amount of calories as well and definitely not less than advised by the NHS bmi calculator as I used to eat lower amounts and could never lose weight because my body thought I was starving it and turned everything I ate into body fat and this weighs more than eating the extra calories does so it stops you from losing weight and sometimes puts weight on instead. I always struggled because of this. Good luck with your journey.
