Poached Egg Advice

Hi all,

Happy Friday!

I am looking for some advice on how to cook the perfect poached eggs, I have tried them in the microwave in a mug, they explode. I have tried them in a vortex of swirling hot water in a pan and they turn into an eggy "ghost". I have also tried cooking them in a poaching pan only to have the water get hot and the little cups float out of the pan!

I do love a poached egg and would like to be able to cook them myself at home.

Thank you :)

Hi,

I use the method that has the egg in a saucepan of hot water, but I add some vinegar to the water prior to adding the egg, and I think that does seem to make a difference.

Good luck with your efforts to poach eggs to your satisfaction - they are a lovely way to enjoy an egg - one of my personal favourites.

Just whenever you can. ☺

I was going to say the cling film method too. Although I've now graduated to dropping the eggs straight into boiling water. No swirling or vinegar just drop them in. It has to be a non stick pan - I use a small frying pan - water about 2 inches deep. And water needs to be forming bubbles on the base of the pan. But I used the cling film method for ages, works an absolute treat :)

Hi I have looked at the link and the replies and this one sounds easiest! Never tried it though.

Another easy method of poaching an egg, grab a cereal bowl, boil some water in the kettle, part fill the bowl, place the egg into the bowl and place on full power for approx 47 seconds in a microwave, believe me this works a treat, all you do is drain the water off and you will have a perfect poached egg

I cook mine in a mug in the microwave, but you need to prick the yolk and white several times first to prevent explosions! You also need to cover them with cling film or a loose lid. I tend to do mine in 20 second increments to check, I have a 1000w microwave. If I use a saucepan then I add vinegar before 'swirling', it helps to keep the white together.

Good luck with it. I so love poached eggs for brekkie.

Hi I cook perfect poached eggs in a lidded small fry pan, bring the water to a boil break the egg into it, put the lid back on you must watch it until the foam comes nearly to the very top of the pan, turn cooker off and leave to cook in its own steam whilst preparing the toast, scoop out with a slotted spoon, works a treat for me, give it a go, but no lifting the lid before you have done the toast. x
