Coffee...

Hi I have read a couple detox plans which say about having no caffeine, then see articles to say can help with weight loss and help you achieve more as can keep you going longer at the gym etc...

Has anyone noticed a difference with caffeine or having none of it?

Hi and welcome, Timetoslim :)

To be honest, I think the difference to weight loss between caffeine and no caffeine, would be minimal and I think it would boil down to personal preference. I choose to drink decaf coffee, but I don't think it's had any effect on my weight loss.

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Take a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the NHS BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

To the right of the HOME page (bottom on a mobile), you'll find Events. In there, you'll find links to our daily Weigh-in's (you will choose just one day per week), our Daily Diary, where we post our menu and exercise plans, for accountability, advice and support and our “What's happening today” thread, where we pop in for a chat.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

Hi and welcome Timetoslim

I went 9 weeks without coffee and my son (a physics student) says don't you feel better, as drinking coffee is a vicious circle it spikes something or other and then crashes so you need coffee again (sorry can't remember his exact words )

Anyway I have gone back to coffee but limit to 2 in the morning and then just drink water the rest of the day - I can't say it has had an affect on my weight loss but by just having those 2 coffees in the morning and none for the rest of the day it has affected my sleep and I am am sleeping better :)

Today I am treating myself to 3 coffees though

Hidden didn't see your reply before I posted ;) But that must have been what my son was on about ;)

I don't think the caffeine itself makes much difference to weight loss, but there can be an lot of calories in the milk or sugar in coffee.

I mostly avoid caffeine because it causes me insomnia, so I usually drink my decaf coffee black - definitely an acquired taste :)

I really love coffee so I would nt want to follow a no caffeine regime. As I drink coffee black with no sugar it doesn't really impact my weight loss but I do try to only have a couple of caffeinated coffees a day & then swap to decaf as I was getting headaches when had drunk too much caffeinated coffee..

HI Timetoslim ,

There's an article in NHS Choices about Coffee, that you might find interesting:

Zest :-)

That was a useful read Zest really the study though a decent size and length wasn't controlled enough (as you can't control the huge number of variables in people's lives for a decade) to prove anything either way. So there isn't a definitive answer and we might as well have a coffee if we enjoy it and it doesn't have any unpleasant effects for us, but give it a miss if it does 😀

I've gradually cut back on caffeine due to sleep disturbance, and see a real improvement. I was underthe I illusion it was just coffee, but tea also has a fair amount of caffeine. Soft drinks too. But the real surprise is my hubby, who scoffed at me but is now also on just one 'high octane' coffee in the morning, and drink de caff the rest of the time and is sleeping much better.

I think the studies suggesting coffee helps sports performance and calorie burn would only relate to high-end athletes.

I have heard of a coffee drink you can buy to lose weight and even know someone selling it but at the end of the day it didn't work for me and everyone including the seller seems to put the weight straight back on afterwards and just starts it again. It's too expensive for what it is anyway. I just decided to join here and I am more happy now. If this is the sort of thing you are talking about.

The slimming coffee thing took off here too for a short time but it was a pyramid scheme

I avoid caffeine as it stops me from sleeping and exacerbates stress levels. I cut out tea, coffee and fizzy drinks four years ago and must say that I did feel better.

I'd say everything in moderation is ok. But there's no fast track to permanent weight loss. If only....

I don't think it makes any difference for weight loss in itself, however if Im busy at work, hungry, and can't get my lunch on time a coffee will keep me going for an hour till I can eat and helps avoid unplanned snacks.

I don't have one every day, and never after 5pm or it would affect my sleep. I prefer full fat milk or cream in coffee (no sugar) so I do count it in my calories whereas I don't bother counting my splash of semi skimmed in tea.

I think the caffeine probably has more effect on some people than others so depends on if you feel better without it or if you enjoy it in moderation. 😀

I don't know why, but my experience as I lost weight was that I became more sensitive to the effects of caffeine. So I avoid coffee completely and now I don't drink tea after 6pm because otherwise I can't sleep!! I avoid having more than 4 cups a day as it makes my heart race and I do feel more agitated as mentioned above.
