I have tried so many times to lose weight and then bang I seem to be fatter. Also, I am feeling down because nothing seems to work. Now I am rather desperate to lose so I can fit into clothes that I only bought a few months ago.

Hi and welcome, jennilou :)

Take a look at the Pinned posts section to the right of your screen (bottom if you're using a mobile), or in the drop down on the 'Posts' page (it says 'arrange by'). Read the Welcome Newbie thread, then move through to the challenges, where we hope you'll find at least one that will appeal to you.

Move down to the Topics, to find a variety of threads, collated into specific topics for ease of access and we ask that you also 'file' your own threads, so that others won't miss your important news.

Take a look at the NHS 12 week plan, as a lot of people have been successful with it, making sure to enter your details into the BMI calculator, to get a calorie allowance tailored to your personal requirements. Don't forget to take your starting measurements and a 'before' picture, as they can be very motivating on days that the scales refuse to co-operate.

To the right of the HOME page (bottom on a mobile), you'll find Events. In there, you'll find links to our daily Weigh-in's (you will choose just one day per week), our Daily Diary, where we post our menu and exercise plans, for accountability, advice and support and our “What's happening today” thread, where we pop in for a chat.

Be aware, that the HU app doesn't give you access to all of our important features, so we advise that you use the full website page.

We've found that to get the best out of this community, we need to be active on the forum, as it's where we exchange information, get motivation and inspiration and make friends. We hope that you'll join us here, regularly, too.

It's only left for me to wish you well on your journey :)

Hi and welcome - Moreless has given you some great advice and information

Wishing you all the best on your journey :)

Hi jennilou and welcome! :)

I would highly recommend the 12-week program as it's a great place to start (at least it was for me). Many of us here have been where you are and have managed with the support on this forum.

Good luck!

Hi jennilou welcome to us. One thing that could be why u have had such problems losing weight is because without realising it you may not have eating enough calories to even lose weight let alone the amount we should have in a day. I know this sounds a bit strange but I was making this mistake when I first joined and found out on here all about it. Check the NHS bmi calculator and find out how many calories you should be having on here to lose weight and then check how many you are actually having. I was only eating around 1000 Cals but your body thinks you are starving it so turns what you do eat into body fat and this weighs more than eating the extra calories does so stops you from losing weight and sometimes means you put weight on instead. I know this sounds strange but was the problem many of us have and I never lost weight on any diet I did but have now managed to lose 2st. Please don't make this same mistake. Good luck with your journey.

Thank HubbysMissMouse, I read articles about eating your calorie intake for your weight and then did the BMI test and was really surprised about how many calories I can have. Thanks for informing about this because I think I have been doing this in my yo yo diets. Thinking less means less weight. It is so surprising to think I can eat more but have to focus on healthy. Only started today hopefully I will keep it up. Again thanks for the info:))

Thanks so much for your lovely replies and advice. I know this sounds strange but I feel great and very well supported even though I have just joined and am actually eager to make a great start. I have looked at the 12 week program and have decided to make a start on that. So lets see how I progress in a week. Will look at all the sites and look forward to being apart of the forum. Thanks again for your warm welcome and will make sure I keep in touch every week. Also, cant wait to put some smilies on too when I figure that out;))

Welcome to the friendliest and most supportive forum. I too found the 12 week plan really helpful. I also downloaded a calorie tracker ( a suggestion from a member here), and find it fantastic to plan and stay on track. Best wishes, only you can do this for you.

Hi 13Valerie, thanks for the info on a calorie tracker. Do you have one that you can suggest. I have been using the one on this site today but it doesnt cover all that I have been eating!! Have been doing a little guessing;)

Hi jennilou

I downloaded the one from Google play. Its called tracker and looks like a green apple with buttons on it. It's really simple to use and it has all the foods I eat in it's database. If you want to suggest foods they'll send you a link to do that. Best wishes. Glad to pass on the tip.

Another one you can use that is free is MyFitnessPal it was advised here too as many use it. If you haven't found one already but I'm sure you have. Thanks for your reply and glad to see that info helped you about calories. Sorry I haven't answered sooner but not been on comp for a few days as my best friend has been in hosp and spent more time their helping them with support than anything and will have to help them at home for few days too but will get round to checking emails I have.

So sorry you're finding things hard. It's so unfair that it goes back on faster than it comes off. Never buy cakes sweets etc. If you want them, cook them yourself. Even for kids. I kept my weight off like this. See Fatty food and make your stomach churn. Try. It worked for me. Hungry? Drink water instead.

Thanks JanetDorothy. Actually, I dont eat sweet things but put any pastries in front of me and wham they are in my mouth so fast. Also, I love pasta. But this time I will really try and limit my intake on these things. Also will look at Fatty food and try to drink water as well, good thing its summer:)
