We advise that you get your calorie allowance from the NHS BMI calculator, as it's less complicated than mfp.

Read this for a more in depth explanation for why eating the right amount is so important

I am using the NHS weight loss plan and since I am female I stuck to 1400/day until I got close to my target weight and I am now gradually increasing my intake to reach maintenance intake. However if I had the occassional blip if I was still less than the lowest range recommended when I inputted my details in the BMI calculator on the NHS choices website (Living well page) I wasn't too disappointed with myself

Hi, welcome!

I agree to use the NHS BMI calculator. There can be the danger if eating too little of sending your body into starvation mode where it will lower your metabolism in the effort to hang on to calories. I would stick with the recommended limit and not try to go below it.

If you have a lot to lose you are probably better to start nearer the top end because as you lose weight you will need to reduce your calories further and if you start too low then you have no where left to go and then you plateau (or gain if you reduce too much) as your body goes into starvation mode and store every single calorie.

I am talking from experience here ( several times) and have been a yo-yo dieter my whole adult life. I am hoping that this time with starting at a much heavier calorie intake that I will lose it and keep it off this time.

First weigh in tomorrow so fingers crossed

Good luck on your weight loss journey and the start of a better, healthier life style

I also struggle to get high enough calories as I don't usually eat during the day so would normally be my evening meal before I had anything.

Since starting this I am making myself eat breakfast and lunch, I don't really enjoy it but I know that's what I need to do to lose all this weight. I want to lose at least 6 stones so it will take ages to get to my final target but at the moment I am settling myself small targets that should be easy to achieve.

I have a jar to put Β£1 per lb in and I am putting water into an empty 4 pint milk bottle. I did that last time I lost weight and it was amazing how hard it was to carry those bottles around and it was a great motivation to lose even more.

Good luck with your new healthier life style
