Japanese Diet - any recipes?

After seeing a TV programme earlier in the week, I've just been reading about the benefits of the Japanese diet. "Thanks to the relatively healthier Japanese diet and lifestyle, Japanese women and men live longer and healthier than everyone else on Earth. Not only can they expect to live 86 and 79 years respectively (compared to 80 and 75 years for Americans), but they can also anticipate an average of 75 years lived healthy and disability-free, the World Health Organization reports. On top of that, Japanese people enjoy the No. 1 lowest obesity rate in the developed world -- 3% -- versus 11% for the French and 32% for Americans, according to the International Obesity TaskForce. When Japanese people adopt a Western-style diet, they put on weight quickly." Has anyone tried any Japanese food? Can you recommend anything? I'm really keen to try some new recipes with tofu, vegetables, seaweed, rice, dumplings and buckwheat noodles. Sadly, I can't eat fish as I'm vegan - but it does seem to have huge health benefits too. Thanks and have a Happy New Year!

Losing weight and maintaining weight loss and a healthy lifestyle should gradually become a way of life. A "diet" isn't always realistically maintainable. I would say you could try out some Japanese recipes as part of a healthy eating plan, but it would surely be expensive to try and source suitable ingredients all the time. i presume you are looking to lose weight not just try out new recipes as you are on this forum? I shall be interested to see if others have any ideas or recipes though. I am always willing to try out something new for a change.

Thanks for the reply. I certainly am trying to lose weight, but love cooking and don't want to get bored eating the same things. I've been advised to cut down on carbs so am also looking at new ways to cook veg and really want to experiment with tofu as an alternative to soya based products.

Hiya, I don't really know much about the Japanese diet as opposed to the Western diet but I wonder if you might be able to find anything to do with any useful recipes on this forum by typing "Japanese" in the search box in the top right hand corner. It might involve a bit of trawling through past stuff to see if you can find anything though. Sorry I'm not of much help. Happy New Year to you too! x

You need to remember that the Japanese diet is suited to the Japanese gut, if you change your diet radically make sure you do it gradually to give your insides time to get used to it.

Perhaps have a look at Blue Zone diets generally.
