Hi, I am 65 and I really need to lose some weight. Right now I am 220lbs and my goal is 200lbs. It is winter here in Wisconsin, Christmas time, and party time. So it will be extremely hard. I ran 3 marathons in my younger days because I put mind into it, so I think it can be done. I have one problem, I love to eat. I am starting tomorrow. :)

Hi Jimdel, you have the same problem as me , I like to eat too

It really comes down to what you want more, to lose some weight or to eat all you want, and you know just as I do that to lose the weight you have got to stop the eating

Try a food diary, keeping a written record helps me, make a plan of what you will eat and when and then stick to it. Avoid eating anything other than what is on that plan. It is not going to be easy in the run up to Xmas and good of you to have taken this step at this time of the year.

Also I see you said that you have run marathons in the past. Do you still run/exercise? If not another thing you can do is increase your exercise

Good luck, let me know how it goes. By the way I am 70 so you are only a youngster 😜

oh Jim I in bigger trouble than you as I gained 3 sizes up over the years

my plan is:

cold shower in the morning

eating slowly and to the plan

start running (never done in the past) any tips?

I'd never run before either - then, at the start of August I began the Couch to 5k program (throu NHS!) and graduated at the beginning of December proving anything is possible!! Lol Go for it!!

Why wait until tomorrow? Start with your next meal! Nothing wrong with loving to eat - just make different, healthier choices! You can still love to eat!

Welcome to the forum, Jim. It's a really supportive and friendly place where there's always someone to listen. Someone more knowledgeable than me will point you in the right direction for advice etc. My own advice would be not to go over the top in your journey, set small goals which are achievable, don't make the mistake of eating too little and never give up! I was 5 weeks without losing an ounce but with the support of this forum which made me see I was eating too little, I then started to lose, not quickly, but steadily and am now within a lb of my 1.5 stone goal. That is nothing compared with many members here who have changed their lives around. By the way your age is no barrier. I'm 76 and as Annde said you're just a young'un. Good luck and stay in touch with the forum 🙂👍

hi Jim & welcome to the forum.

we all love food and that is why we are all here haha.... but just because you want to get healthy it doesnt mean you have to stop eating .. you just need to make better choices.

Hi Jim, good luck with starting your diet, I started mine around a year ago properly and have lost just under 4 stone. I love food as well and it's hard giving up all the favourites especially around the holidays.

Hi Jim

I'm Bryn in Wales UK , I am 72 and weighing 240 lbs ! Incidentally I am starting afresh tomorrow morning also , so if you want to we can do our own weigh in on a Monday morning ,there is a time difference but by the end of the day we can have each others results!

Wow, I wasn't expecting this kind of support. I really appreciate it.

I have the extra motivation that this may be life and death, because I have an aneurysm in my belly that keeps growing toward the dangerous level. I take blood pressure medicine, walk 3 miles a day and live a fairly clean life. Taking 20 lb off would do wonders for my heart and blood pressure and would probably help keep my aneurysm from growing. My weight today at 219 1/2. I will post every time I drop 2 lbs. To the people who replied to me, I am wondering what your status is. Where did you start and what is your goal? Where are you at in reaching your goal?

So Bryn, we are starting this together. Every Monday at the end of the day, let's compare progress. We can do this.

I am good at the exercise dept. My tip for people who are older and overweight. Walking 2 or 3 miles a day is good, relaxing, and healthy. I would not recommend walking on concrete, but find a big park with soft surfaces to walk at. If you can't find a park, then the concrete is better than nothing. Running is good too, but is harder on you body and joints. You risk getting injured one way or another. I still run once or twice a week about 2 miles at a time, very carefully.

Thanks again.

Ok game on ! I walk about two miles a day and swim for 30 minutes each day , it's the eating gets to me !!! Look forward to next Monday 😇

ok Brynjo, how did you do?

I know the first lbs come off easy. I dropped 5 lbs my first week. Next week is Christmas week, I will be happy with 1 lb weight loss. Starting point 220 lbs, ending goal 200, now 215.

Hi Brynjo, how are you doing. I gained back 1lb last week. So I have a net loss of 4lbs. I am happy that is all I gained considering all the food that was in front of me. Now I have to get through this week and then I am hoping smooth sailing (losing). Jim

It should get a little easier now. Sitting at 5 lb lost. No more excuses, got 15 more to lose. Good Luck, see if we can do this.

All the best Jim and keep posting on this wonderful forum.

You go for it Jim, I'm backing you all the way.

I'm at the start of my journey too and I'm going to give the Couch to 5k a go. I think it might be a case of sucking in air from Bradford for the first few weeks, but I want to do it.

As for the food, if I take sweets/treats completely out of my diet I think I'll crave it all the more, so maybe a little in moderation.

Good luck :-)

jimdel in reply tohazel0303

Hi Bryn,

I have been kind of stuck. I am maintaining my 5 lb loss. It looks like you might be at 5 or 6lbs loss right now. I need to get back on the wagon somehow. Thanks for keeping tabs on me. Maybe 1 lb a month would be a good goal for me at this point.

This is the way the body works ! I find it useful to write everything down that you put in your mouth , you will be surprised at the list by the end of the day !
