Just turned 45 and need to change life style

Hi I'm 18 stone and so unfit it's unreal. I don't smoke or drink but I'm a coach potatoe.

Last week I took a step forward for the exercise and bought a puppy. He's coming in a few weeks time. But before then we go on a cruise next week and my aim is to walk round the deck as many times as possible.

Hi Annie,

Welcome to the Weight Loss NHS forum. I started my own weight loss journey weighing 18 stone 8 pounds, and I felt like a couch potato back then as well, but I'm feeling a lot better since losing weight and getting down to a healthy BMI, and I can assure you it is possible and I think it's great that you've joined the forum, and you're looking forward to changing your lifestyle, and getting fitter and healthier.

I hope you enjoy your Cruise next week - is there a gym on the Cruise ship so you could maybe do some exercise there as well? Maybe some dancing too? I don't know what activities you enjoy, but it can be good to try new things, and see what works best for you.

Have you seen our Pinned posts area? There's a really good post by moreless which is called 'Welcome Newbies' - and I'd recommend a read of that. Many of us follow the NHS 12 week plan, and it is really good.

If you like the idea of a weekly weigh-in, then join us for the Monday group weigh-ins. It's a supportive and friendly group, and you can find the link in the Events section - below the Pinned posts. There are also several really good Challenges going on - so you can find details of those in the Pinned posts too. Click on 'view more' and you'll see the Recipe Collation post too.

Have a great week.

Lowcal :-)

Hi Annie107 and welcome😀

Sounds like you've got a very exciting couple of weeks ahead of you. A lovely cruise and then a bouncy puppy to run around after when you come home 🐕

I walk our dog everyday and it really helps to keep you motivated especially in the winter when it's raining and you would normally cuddle up on the sofa .... the dog still needs to go out!! I've actually come to love walking in the rain/wind/snow etc as it's very exhilarating 😆

You have definitely come to the right place for motivation and advice I don't think I would of achieved my weight loss with out it 😇

I hope you have a lovely holiday and looking forward to seeing your progress on your weight loss journey when you return. 🌞

Good luck.

Claire x

Hi Annie107. Having a puppy will certainly keep you on your toes! Hope you enjoy your cruise and maybe you could set yourself a challenge to walk around the deck so many times a day. Well done for taking the first step. Keep at it and bit by bit you will become fitter and healthier and slimmer. Good luck to you and hope you can join in with the Monday weigh in when you return from your holiday. This forum is a great place for help and support. The best thing is it is 24/7 not just once a week like a meeting in a hall with SW or WW :)

I know it seems like a lot at the moment, but I remember hearing someone reply after he had lost 400lbs and someone asked him how he did it and he said "I just lost one pound, 400 times". I like that.

Anyway, I just wanted to say, it can be done and I was just like you before I began to lose (nearly 7 stone) weight. I could barely walk and I felt awful, but I just went and joined my local gym and went in there with my headphones on and did my stuff. Not much at first, but it very quickly improved. I also made a point of trying to do 10,000 steps every day. I couldn't do half of that at first, but it also very quickly got a lot easier.

One thing I always say to new dieters who have a lot of weight to lose is that you can have a load more calories a day than you think, I started off having something like 1900 and still lost a good amount of weight every week! If you have a long journey, it is wise not to cut back too much too soon.

Above all, keep on posting here and joining in when you can, it helps keep you focussed and makes the whole thing a lot more fun.

Please share photos of the puppy when you get him/her and enjoy your cruise!

Hi Annie107

I was 18 stones when I joined this forum, now nearly a stone lighter thanks mainly to the non judgemental support here, LessToLoose is right about eating enough, I didn't believe I could have so many calories so cut back to 1000 a day and it wasn't enough, I average 16-1800 a day now and the weight is coming off slowly but surely. Do you have the NHS exercise referral scheme in your area? It's really good with a good choice of classes to go to at all times of the day. Everyone is there for a health reason and you don't feel out of place. Here where I live you have to do minimum 2classes a week but you soon want to do more. Just 1 more thing, we like going on holiday, especially cruises. When you get back just get back to you healthy eating ways, don't beat yourself up if you've feel that you've gone a bit overboard ( not literally😁😁)

That sounds like a great start! Wishing you all the best and hope you enjoy the cruise 😀

If you visit the NHS link there is a really useful BMI site that gives you an indication of the number of calories you should aim for taking into account your weight, gender, age & activity levels. Mine was more generous than I thought, so there is a bit of scope if you have a meal out or something.

Walking is excellent & much more fun with a puppy. My aim is 10,000 steps a day & that can really help you to feel better & is free.

Enjoy your cruise & then start your journey when get back feeling really refreshed.

Hi and welcome to this lovely helpful forum with so many inspiration posts to read. I started at 17.1 just under 8 weeks ago on Monday I was 15.10 still a long way to go but the toitoise won the race didn't he.

I realised I had put so much weight on when my coats wouldn't even zip up, I was getting out of breath very quickly too even now after just 1.5st off things are getting easier so you will soon see a result with your weight going down.

That puppy will soon have you running around after it I have 2 of my own and dog sit my son's a few days a week so it's bedlam here on certain days.

For exercise apart from taking the dog I started walking on the treadmill ( it was just sat as a clothes horse ) now I have got an exercise bike too and recently started the Leslie Sanson 1 mile walk you can get off You Tube.

Hope you have a fantastic holiday ready for the chaos a new puppy brings. Good luck on your journey. Bev😊🛳🛳🛳
