Clinical obesity shock!

Hello, i'm new here. I'm 5'3" and weigh 12stone 10lb. I was shocked to be described as 'clinically obese' so now have an overall target of 9stone 13lb as my ideal weight. The Nhs have given me the more modest goal of 11stone 5lb but that will still take me 19weeks at 1lb per week. This is discouraging. Will I be able to do this?

Truthfully, do not think about how long this may take. Take a week at a time. Each pound is a pound closer to the new you.

From one who knows, a slower loss is much, much more likely to stay off ... along the way your metabolism adjusts and your eating habits improve so instead of "being on a diet" , you develop a new way of life that becomes second nature. Yes there are slip ups but you can recover from them.

In 2014 I was 12st, two stone overweight. It took me one year to lose it all. But the best part is that I have since maintained my healthy weight ( within 0-4 lbs ) ever since.

If you start now, aim to lose a pound or two per week, and you will become much more aware of portion size and calorie counts. Even when I am on holiday ( right now Im in spain, enjoying lots of seafood and rioja ) I can still have what I like , and even if I do gain 2-3 lbs, I know I can lose it on return.

Good luck, you can beat this.

Hello lizzieG101 yes I'm sure you will be able to do its is the start of week five for me I started at12st9lb and now down to 12st 1lb , which I am so pleased about as I have had the odd struggle as I love my food so much and find weekends very hard however getting involved with the challenges on here and getting on with a lot of walking I'm finding its working for me so good luck I'm sure you will do well :)

Hi LizzieG101, I am 5' 2", and also was 11st 8 lb, but have set a target weight loss of 1lb per week. I have in the past set 2lb per week but when I failed to achieve that I got so despondent and threw in the towel. Older wiser, heavier. I broke my weight loss achievements down into small manageable portions. I am just 1lb of reaching my first milestone (no pun intended) of 11st.

11 st (154 lb) in 8 weeks is doable, then 10 st 10 lb (150 lb) in 4 weeks is als doable.

The big goal is too far away on a distant horizon, I would give up before getting there.

I have tried in the past to just excercise, I have tried just to reduce my calories. Neither worked. But combining the two does seem to be working. My goals have been over ambitious.

By keeping my expected loss small so that when I sometimes loose more it's a week for celebration, running round the house like a lunatic. :-) remember baby steps. Good luck.

Very simply, YES you will. good luck

Sounds quite an extreme categorising of your weight, LizzieG101 But I am not qualified to comment properly. What I would say is yes, definitely you can, the advice above is right though, get started, be motivated and enjoy the journey. Don't know how active you are but walking is a really good means of exercise - you just need to step out the door and you're burning calories. I like using RunKeeper app to count the distance and calories I've burned and My Fitness Pal to log calories in and out (food and exercise) - they are not for everyone though. The best motivator is the Monday weigh in - gives you a focal point every week. Go for it and you'll get plenty support!

Hi Lizzie I was feeling like you in April 5'1" and 13 st 8lb ouch!!! Break it down into small goals otherwise end target is overwhelming. Already I'm down to 12st 0 and feel moving in right direction. Keep a food diary and don't try to do too much change all in one go. I revised my eating habits and have just started to exercise more. Good luck x
