Resisting temptation πŸ˜•

β€’12 Replies

Today two ex colleagues surprised me with a visit and it was lovely to see them. The down side was they came armed with a load of edible goodies !!! I think they must have ransacked M&S food hall πŸ€” Luckily I was just in from circuit class and had not had lunch !!!

Now I'm reflecting on my choices !!! 😳 Did secumb to a small sample of most and a cream cake ( really enjoyed it !!) so plan for evening meal is damage limitation!!

What has really got me thinking is how we feed people and think we a being really nice ! I know I've been very guilty of this in the past. As we chatted and reminisced I realised this is what we did at work !!! It did not matter if it was a good, stressful or awful day we used food as a reward/coping strategy ! No wonder it's taking me forever to kick the habit ! Lol

Another lightbulb moment methinks πŸ’‘

I agree when you think about it, as kids my grandad would take me to the shop for a chocolate bar and say "go on have two" I thought it was great as I didn't get spoilt at home but it was probably wrong to do that. When we give gifts it is chocolates or something sugary toffees etc we very rarely give someone a fruit basket unless they are ill, we celebrate with selection boxes, Easter eggs, toffee apples and see those foods as nice foods. Hope you manage to have a nice evening meal with your damage limitation in mind.

It's a problem isn't it? How we use sweet things as treats/rewards/gifts? Most of my friends know that I'm not eating sweet stuff but it is a much bigger problem πŸ˜•My son is a nurse and often is given chocolates πŸ˜• Very nice to be appreciated but he watches what he eats too

Hi Anna,

I was a nurse and I'm sure my sugar addiction was kick started by all the choccies that patients used to leave and stayed on the nurses station to graze !!

Hi Flossie,

You've been having quite a few Lightbulb Moments, and they are very illuminating - pardon the pun (I couldn't resist a little pun there!). :-)

Definitely a very common thing for people to 'reward' or 'show their love/concern/caring' etc with gifts of food - it's such a large part of our culture and tradition.

It's good that you'd not had your lunch when your ex colleagues surprised you with their edible feast, and I'm glad you'd also had your circuit class.

Hope you're enjoying your evening.

Lowcal :-)

That thought has occurred to me too Flossie and I was ashamed to realise that I used to be a "feeder". Food was given to me, as an expression of love and caring and I continued the tradition! :o

I'm not as bad as I used to be, much to the disgust of my grandchildren! :D

It is so easy to 'feed', for me it was how I grew up. Gran always baked, treats were special and always homemade , a proper Sunday 'tea' was and still is a favourite !!! Must be hard not spoiling your grandchildren !!

I love sunday teas! :)

I have to think of different ways to spoil my grandchildren, although I have to admit, we still bake together :)

I think that's lovely, you can't beat children learning real skills from their grandparents πŸ˜ƒ

Flossie, I definitely think this was a lightbulb moment. how many times have I solved or thought I was solving problems with food! I wanted to feel better or feel worse or make someone else feel better by feeding them! what do we do for funerals but take food. I think that may be a bad example, but you see what I mean. to celebrate things or to see someone we haven't seen in forever, we take goodies. why? it is a thing we do in society. we should take a book of poetry or a nice plant instead I believe.

Hi Katy,

I'm certainly going to try to move away from food rewards, but you are so right it's what we do in most cultures. This Christmas no one is getting chocs or biscuits !!!
