I am 5'4 and 11st 3.5 lb, the BMI calculator says my BMI is 27.1, overweight (which I already knew!) and calorie intake should be 1450-1865. I've been sticking to 1400. Does this mean I should lose weight if I have 1450 but shouldn't put any on if I have 1865?

Bit Confused
Depending on your activity levels, I'd settle for 1400, unless you are very , very active, the bmi , prob means maintaining weight, the 1800 plus, that's my guess
Hi Caz28,
I'm putting the link to where it explains the BMI Calculation, as this may help to clarify your question:
nhs.uk/Livewell/weight-loss...
As it says there "The plan is designed to help you lose weight at a safe rate of 0.5kg to 1kg (1lb to 2lb) each week by sticking to a daily calorie allowance.
"
When you complete the BMI calculator - you will already have put in your stats in terms of your current height, weight, and activity levels, and therefore the range of recommended calories you have been given is already based on those figures - which means if you eat at the higher end of the range, then you'd be likely to lose 1 pound per week, but at the lower end of the range, then you'd be likely to lose 2 pounds - this is how I've always understood it - but I could be wrong...!
Hopefully others will be giving their views on it too - basically you can give it a go and see how you get on. You can also vary your intake day to day within the range, depending on what events and stuff is going on, and your activity levels etc.
Hope this makes sense.
Have a great weekend.

I find it confusing too, and thought the same as you? The top figure is to maintain. MFP suggests a much lower figure (1250) than the NHS one (1500-1900) so i opt for somewhere in the middle, between 1400-1600, I am happy with a slow steady weight loss About 1/2 -1lb a week 😊
Good luck
hi, same height and just a bit heavier than you. I'm finding 1400 cals with light activity - i.e. walking around 10,000 steps daily, doesn't result in any real weight loss for me. Will be interested in whether you lose with this intake. Good luck with the diet
thanks, good luck to you too. I lost 4lb in the first week but hardly anything since, now on 3rd week......
I have to agree with Zest on this. My personal opinion, is to eat as many calories as you can, whilst still being able to lose weight, because as you lose weight, your calorie allowance will reduce.
It's not a happy prospect to have to lower your intake so much, that you're going to be constantly hungry and in danger of eating unwisely to compensate.
All the best
