Some time ago a research position was advertised for Loughborough university funded by coco cola . Part of the job description was to carry out research as determined by the funder.

Stories like that make me want to scream Get private industry out of research!

One of the problems is that industries may be the only ones to have the money to fund research. Money for research and development has been squeezed hard over many years.
