I made a batch of new soup, which is made from Carrots, white onions, Cannellini beans and Pot Barley (it's actually really tasty!), and I had it alongside a few things I'd been meaning to try - pickled egg (my first ever - I loved it!); sauerkraut (I have had this years ago, but not recently, and I liked it!); 2 types of unpasteurised cheese (really good!); some wholegrain bread and peanut butter and a pickled onion.
What did you have for your evening meal tonight?
Hope you're all having a great evening and that your week is going well so far.

I had a ham omelette (2 eggs, 2 slices ham, drop of milk, salt and pepper), 200g lightly spiced potato wedges, and a monster pepper, onion, cucumber and balsamic salad.
Huge plateful, very full tummy, 579 calories = very happy person!
Your meal sounds really tasty - glad you're a very happy person, and I'm just about to read your post, as I noticed you've just posted - hope you enjoy this forum, it's such a great community!
Wishing you a great week and it's not long now till the weekend!

Looks really really tasty😃 Love peanut butter but cannot handle I'd well, once the jar is open I'm never out of it !!!
Yes, I love peanut butter too, but thankfully I only have a small portion of it each time. It can be very moreish.
Pot barley has quite a nutty flavour, and it's had its outermost, inedible husk removed. It's different to 'pearl barley' which is more refined (as pearl barley has been both husked and also polished). I think pot barley is meant to be more nutritious than pearl barley, which is why I chose it.
I shall use it more often - I bought it as it was on special offer in my local health food shop, so I thought I'd give it a go.
Hope you are having a good week and hope you had an enjoyable meal tonight too.
Bought some no sugar organic peanut butter, hope I don't regret it !! Also got some Swedish soughdough crispbread at 22 cals a slice, think it will a nice snack
Great! You're sounding really determined, and I like the sound of your purchases.
Catch up on Monday!
Lowcal
p.s. I just got a link about the health benefits of eating peanuts, so I thought I'd attach it here, just to celebrate the fact you bought that peanut butter:
Lovely to see new and interesting flavour combinations 😊
I love to cook and am always trying new ways to eke out the calories 😊 We had hot pot 😊 lean pork, onion, carrot, leek, kidney beans, tin of tomatoes covered in thin slices of potatoe, baked on low all afternoon 😊 According to MFP around 400 calories a serving, very tasty, proper comfort food 😊
Thank you! I had been meaning to try some of those things for a while, and so it seemed like a good idea to put them together, and I have to say I wasn't disappointed, as it packed a very zingy zap of flavours, and I really enjoyed it!
Great that you love to cook - your meal of Hot Pot sounds really delicious. The fact you cooked it slowly all afternoon would really eke out the flavours, and I can imagine it made your kitchen smell really good! Like you say, proper comfort food.
Never had sauerkraut but like the sound of it 😊 Strong flavours really help with the healthy choices 😊 I don't care for bland food 😕 Good luck with your final push towards your goal 😊
Thanks very much Anna, your encouragement is much appreciated! I agree, bland food can be very boring, and having some spice and flavours really adds to the enjoyment.
Hi lowcal that looks lovely, my OH made me a lovely stir fry chicken Sainsbury's packet of mushroom stir fry and small black bean sauce, less than 300 cals each i thoroughly enjoyed it x😀
That's a very interesting combination Lowcal. I've never tried sauerkraut, or pickled egg, but I love pickled onions, so I really ought to get more adventurous!
I boiled a joint of silverside yesterday and thought I'd make some kind of beefy soup for lunch today, however, by the time I'd finished throwing in heaps of veg and beef, it was more like a beef stew, so we had it for dinner with a crusty roll
I think that as you love pickled onions that you might also like sauerkraut and definitely pickled eggs - I am going to look into doing my own at some point, as they are quite expensive to buy - but doing them myself would cut costs considerably, so I must try to do that.
Your Beef Stew was obviously meant to be - no beefy soup for you today, but the Beef Stew sounds like a really hearty meal and between you and me, I love a Crusty Roll.
Oops, I'm still doing those eye exercises, and Lucca warned me they don't count in the exercise stakes. At least I think it was Lucca...!
Hope you've had a great day and that your evening will be relaxing and enjoyable!
That's quite a different meal you had - the tin of tuna in spring water with a cup of tea. I hope you enjoyed it. Tuna is a very tasty fish. The things is you had a fairly heavy lunch, so you lightened your tea to compensate, and I don't think that's sad.
I didn't need a snack last night after my meal, so was happy about that.
Thanks Lowcal - I was just wanting to run out to a gym class and wanted to eat something easy fast; and that was there! As you say, not sad; just practical.
You know, the ability of people here to find positives in everything is really wonderful! I am actually way way more cheerful and positive about lots of aspects of life; not saying it's all this, it might be having lost quite a wedge of weight (just discovered by cholesterol is back within normal range after ten or more years which I thought would never happen) but thank you to you and all the administrators!
Wow, it's so great to hear that your cholesterol is back within the normal range after 10 or more years - that is so fantastic! Congratulations also on losing quite a 'wedge of weight' - I like they way you described that! Particularly great that you're feeling way way more cheerful and positive about lots of aspects of life, it sounds like you're really enjoying things.
Hi Lowcal, glad you enjoyed your tea, the pickled items wouldn't agree with my tummy but the soup looked very tasty, pearl barley reminds me of school dinners stew in the seventies when we had proper fresh cooked school meals, scrummy! ☀️
Thanks - I have to say I really enjoyed the pickled items, but I do love that taste. Thanks for your comment about the soup - glad it made you reminisce about your fresh cooked school meals in the '70's. It's nice to reminisce sometimes.
Thank you! Your meal sounds really delicious - I love roast chicken with lots of lovely veggies, and I love them roasted - I like your sour dough bread choice - I've been thinking about trying to make my own sour dough bread, but again it's something I've not yet got round to. I must give it a try sometime soon.
Have a great day and enjoy your weekend when it arrives - not long now!

That looks great Lowcal - all tasty things I had tagliatelle with tomato and basil sauce with borlotti beans - the doc has told me to start having one meal a day with wheat in so they can test me again for gluten intolerance. I was nervous about having pasta after 10 months without any, but so far no stomach aches. But that's why I've kept my dinner simple - to put as little strain on my stomach as possible - so no salad accompaniment or strong flavours tonight.
Thank you! I really like the sound of your meal. There was an article in the Daily Mail recently which was advocating the health benefits of eating pasta with regard to preventing strokes. If I can find the link, I'll put it in this reply, incase you want to have a read.
Your Tagliatelle with tomato and basil sauce and borlotti beans sounds like something I would definitely love to eat.
Good luck with reintroducing the wheat to enable you to be tested for gluten intolerance - hope it goes well. Glad you've not had any stomach aches after eating the pasta. Sensible that you're keeping your meal simple to enable you to reduce any strain on your stomach during this period of re-introduction. Good luck!
Hope you have a lovely weekend - it's nearly here.
Soup looks good Lowcal, I had a 3 egg omelette with 25g of reduced fat strong cheddar cheese and a large salad (mixed leaves, tomatoes, cucumbers and red pepper), followed up with a small orange. Yummy.
We had chicken supreme made with leftover chicken and served with salt and pepper baked wedges, green beans and sweetcorn not the healthiest option but delicious
It's years since I've eaten Chicken Supreme, I used to have it regularly during my student days. But I think it was from a tin back then - for ease of cooking - I bet you've done a much nicer version and avoided processed foods to make it. The baked wedges, green beans and sweetcorn sound healthy to me. There's a range of nutrients there, and it sounds delicious! I often do baked wedges, really tasty.
Hope you're having a great day and wishing you a good weekend ahead.
Lowcal your meal covered a lot of lovely ingredients. I had thin sliced ham, mixed salad with nearly everything in it. But I was naughty and had an individual cheesecake with fruit on top.
Thanks so much for your lovely comments. Much appreciated.
Your Ham salad sounds like it was really good! Salads can be so versatile and you can put lots in them. The individual cheesecake with fruit on top sounds delicious too.
Hope you have a great weekend and a good day today.
I had one of my staples tonight. Garlic and chopped cherry tomatoes heated in a frying pan (tomato juice means no oil is needed) with rocket and feta cheese stirred in at the end. Mix of flavours is amazing. Had it with potato croquettes tonight though I normally stir it into some pasta shells.
I'm going to copy and paste your recipe idea, as it sounds absolutely delicious! Thanks so much for sharing your meal idea, and I can imagine that mix of flavours is really good! I think I'll stir it into some pasta shells. I really liked the article in the Daily Mail (I put the link in the reply to Ruth_Canal_Runner, above (if you want to see it) about the health benefits of pasta - I choose the wholegrain brown pastas, and I absolutely love meals containing wholegrain pasta.
Thanks for commenting and giving me a great idea for a future meal. Hope you have a lovely weekend when it arrives and a good day today.
Yesterday was a basic that the whole family eats for us...baked sausages, potatoes, peas, carrots, cauli and broccoli, with gravy.
Tonight will be baked fish, roasted sweet potato chunks, baked beans, a small fried egg (I LOVE my durastone pans, 1 cal frying made easy!), and for me I will cook up a bit of pepper, tomato and mushroom chopped up, and melt 30g of mature reduced fat cheese on top of it. I had porridge for breakfast so didn't really need any lunch, but I'm starting to get hungry now and the extra veggie bit on my plate will fill me right up for the evening! I love this meal, it's like sitting down to a banquet! I like to do it when I've not felt hungry enough to eat lunch for the day as it's nearly 900 cals, but I can afford it as breakfast came out at 350. I might have some fruit with dream topping later given that I'll still have about 500 cals left. Ah, the joys of being tall and overweight, you get more calories - sorry to rub it in for those who are stuck with 1400 cals a day but your time to gloat will come later when I start to get hungry as I lose more weight and my cals go down!
Hope everyone has a good weekend. Btw, Crumpet the cat says "Miaow, miaow, miiiiaowwww", which I think means "Hello, stay on track folks!"
Wow, I love your description of those meals, they all sound really delicious! I can imagine you sitting down to your lovely Banquet later and thoroughly enjoying every mouthfull. Fruit with dream topping sounds great too. I allow myself a dessert on Friday and Saturday evenings, and tonight it will be half an apple crumble (the small individualised crumbles) with some vanilla ice-cream. I am really looking forward to my meal tonight - it will be Cajun chicken, roasted potato chips, and mixed vegetables (broccolli, carrots and cauliflower) - I roast the vegetables in the oven with some olive oil, and they are tasty! Then the half Apple crumble and vanilla ice-cream.
I'm excited as it's the weekend - Miaow, miaow, miiiiaowwww by the way back to Crumpet - I can speak 'cat' you know!
Here's to us all staying on track for the weekend, and having a really great weekend.
oohhh yours sounds yummy tonight too...all this food talk, I am actually starting to get hungry now, I can't wait for it all to cook! I've already got dinner on the go as we don't eat too late in the day...son would never last out for a late dinner and quite honestly, neither would I! I don't usually have a pudding after dinner at all, but sometimes if I have some spare calories in the bank (usually from not being hungry at lunchtime, like today) I will have a kind of "mock" trifle, using some of the sugar free jelly, some chilled fruit and a dollop of dream topping - it feels so sinful and yet it's not that high in calories for what it is. I love to use mandarin oranges or pineapple, really lovely and zingy, gets the tastebuds going into overdrive!
Lol @ cat speak, Crumpet is delighted to be getting so much attention!
I hope you enjoy your evening meal, and obviously the whole of your weekend in general! x
Hi - I've just put my dinner in to cook this very minute, so I'm looking forward to eating it really soon. I prefer to eat my evening meal as early as I can - glad Crumpet's enjoying the attention! Have a lovely meal - glad yours is cooking too.
This looks very nice Lowcal and you had some interesting foods on that plate which must have tickled your taste buds You definitely kept it interesting with every bite My evening meal yesterday was haddock stir fry with bulgar wheat and kale which was also very tasty
Thanks for your comments, and my taste buds were definitely tickled.
I would never have considered trying a 'haddock stir-fry' and I really like the sound of the combination of haddock, bulgar wheat and kale in a stir-fry, so I'm also going to copy and paste your meal idea too, as I think it would definitely be something I'd enjoy at a later date. It sounds really tasty, and glad you enjoyed it.
Hope you have a wonderful day today and I'll look out for your update post.
