Hi I'm Wendy and I am desperate to loose weight. My worry is my mobility is poor so I won't manage any exercises. Everyday I will try and go for a walk. Here goes.....

Wendy
Hi Wendy, when you say your mobility isn't good is it just due to your weight or something else?
I am very overweight and suffer with chronic back pain. My mobility was becoming an issue due to my size and a complete lack of exercise - I struggled to walk 1km.
I started walking 20 mins a day, 10 mins one way and then 10 mins back home. Within 4 months I could do 5km without stopping and it's now 8 months later and I can do 10km without stopping (but I am knackered) and I've lost nearly 4 stones.
I can really recommend walking, it helps a great deal and burns a fair few calories.
I did have to walk through some back pain for a couple of weeks but it didn't take long to get past this.
Get yourself so decent shoes - I use Skechers and this will help too.
Good luck
What an inspiring story - I didn't realise how far you had come!
Thanks for the reply sueper.
You have done exceptionally well with your weight loss and walking. Congratulations you must be delighted with yourself. Clothes shopping will have be in order :-).
I have M.E plus fibromyalgia which stops my mobility. I intend gritting through the pain and doing a little walking. Its the energy side & other problems that could be an issue.
Today I will go on-line and order a pair of sketchers, I've been thinking about it for a awhile.
Thank you for the advice and once again well done...xx
Might I suggest something with a little built up heal - this is what suits me best (though we are all different).
Good luck with the walking, hopefully it may help energise you a bit too
Don't think too long; life has a habit of slipping by...
I second the good shoes. I started couch to 5k in completely the wrong shoes, but at least I started. A good way of telling yourself you've committed to something is creating some rituals around it. Putting a good pair of shoes on to go out for a walk/run is a great way of making yourself feel purposeful
Thanks for the reply Ruth.
The fact that people like yourself have replied will spur me on.
Thank you, Wendy xx
Hi Wendy,
Starting with walking is a great idea and that is in fact exercise, as Sueper says this really can lead you in all sorts of directions.
Ruth suggested rituals. Don't forget to borrow some headphones and listen to music, the radio or talking books sometimes.
Try some of the NHS live well exercises at home. If you can't complete a movement do the little bit you can. You might be surprised ........ I have found these fantastic.
Hi Wendy....lovely to welcome you to the forum. Just making the decision is wonderful and now you're on your way with a whole host of supporters here to cheer you on! Do remember to post and reply to posts as this keeps us all positive about our journey!....hope your first walk goes well.
As others have said even a small amount of movement can get you started in the right direction.
Commit to doing 30 days of exercise even if its just 10 minutes walking.
I'll bet you after 30 days you will start to enjoy it and realise you feel much better when your body is moving.
Hi Wendy
You are in the right place for lots of support and motivation You've had some really helpful replies regarding the exercise side of things - walking is great, and as sueper has demonstrated, what seems daunting at first soon becomes a lot easier.
Remember as well that even if exercise is limited at the moment, you can still lose the weight through making the healthy food choices and perhaps starting to count calories etc.
Good luck and keep posting
Hi Lucca
My exercise will be limited but the replies have endorsed the fact any exercise is better than none. Hopefully after a while it will become easier but with my health I will need to be careful.
Yesterday I was online to find out the calories on certain foods but I intend getting a book to help with that.
Thank you for replying to my post.

Hi Wendy
If you are able to get online fairly often, the MyFitnessPal website is very helpful to log your calories and find out values. Loads of people here use it daily - if you have a smartphone you can also scan the barcode of food packets to help find the calorie value
Hi Wendy, I'm in a similar position, arthritis and problems with leg pain/swelling at the moment. I've just done my first week of calorie counting and lost 4 1/2 pounds, without going out to do any exercise, because it's too painful atm. Hoping when some of the weight is gone, the pain will lessen and I want to eventually be able to walk a mile a day on the flat, then go from there. Slow and steady wins the race tho, don't overdo things and put yourself backwards physically. I lost weight this week by simply changing my diet and counting my calories. The NHS calorie counter has been brilliant, I don't think you even need to buy a book tbh! nhs.uk/Livewell/weight-loss...
Good luck, keep posting and replying here, it is really motivating!
Morning Wendy, it doesn't matter if you have got limited mobility as even a little walk daily is a start. Doing little things will build up your stamina and things will start to get easier.
I have a very poor back and often my walk will help me to ease the pain.
Start small and build up and you will find lots of difference.
Be inventive exercise comes in many different ways, bit of dancing at home, sometimes in my chair when I couldn't stand for long.
This is a great site for motivation so I am sure you do will do well
Hi Wendy, I also have problems with joint pain but I do try and do a walk most weeks as I find this helps with mobility. A stretch class or Restorative Yoga Class could also help, it does me.
Good luck
Hi Audjean
I have not tried yoga but I did Tai-chi once and enjoyed it. Unfortunately I got behind with the classes as I couldn't make it every week.
You have made me think about it again. A dvd would be a good idea so I could do it at home. Good idea
Thank you for relying to my post.

Thanks everyone you have made me feel welcome and I appreciate all your replies and help! xx
Hi Wendy - I can't walk either due to my torn thigh muscle, im doing in-chair exercises tho for upper body and arms etc. Im sure exercise helps, but when i lost lots of weight back years, i just dieted and still lost ok. I think exercise is over rated as a diet tool.
Good luck x
Changing your eating habits is number 1) we eat a KETO diet high protein, high fat- you love it butter so have it on your veggie's, greens. No breads, pasta, potato's, rice, beans in other words many carb's. You might look into this diet my husband has lost 65lbs in a year. I have to eat carb's my weight is so low for a diabetic. He had some issues about exercising he traveled 5 days a week and did not want to be seen in the gym over weight. I told him everyone starts some where each baby step on that those machines will reduce calories. They started melting off get going as far as you can you have a great team behind you!
Hi Wendy!
At the risk of repeating what had previously been said, any amount of excersise is good!
I am morbidly obese, and get back pain when I stand out walk for any amount of time. However, I've been on the nhs plan for the past 2 weeks, and I have noticed that the pain is getting better....to the point where I walked 1·5 miles from work today!!!! Yes it did get a bit achey, but I pushed on. Now it's not a long walk....but it's the furthest I've walked for years!!!
I can't say anything about your M.E, but I can say that the phychologist I work for is a fibromyalgia specialist, and is always telling people how good nutrition is incredibly important for fibro recovery. So, if you are able to improve your diet and nutrition it may ease your fibro symptoms and make exercise easier?
Good luck!
Good for you NiCherry, 1.5 miles after two weeks is amazing progres. 😀
