He's my 6 month old basset hound and he's a total gem.
The NHS should prescribe basset hounds for depressions and anxiety, also for obesity and this is why:
Eric makes me laugh every day. It's impossible to be low when there's a basset about. Whether he's falling over, tripping up over his ears or planting my shoes in the garden, he's a laugh a minute.
You don't have time to worry or be anxious when you have a hound. They are into everything and whilst awake, if you take your eyes off them for a second they'll definately be doing something that puts them in mortal danger so it's best just to pay at all times, leaving very little room in your brain for dwelling or festering on negativity.
Finally, Eric's need a long walk every day otherwise you spend your evenings with a moansing, whinging dog sitting at your feet barking every few minutes until about midnight. Since getting Eric my daily steps have tripled. You walk further when you're out too because it's so much fun watching him bumble about
FINALLY the best thing about prescription bassets is their undeniable ability to attract positive attention wherever they go. For some reason, basset induced happiness appears to be infectious and just a single basset in a small community increases happiness for everyone exponentially. I think it's the ears....
Basset hounds are the answer to the depression, obesity cycle. FACT.
they should let me run the NHS.

Totally understand, my cocker spaniel is my buddie, he makes me laugh everyday, he makes new friends (human and doggy) all the time, he is my personal trainer, and is always by my side........
I feel so jealous! My flat is too tiny to accommodate a dog, and I go away a lot, but I really enjoyed reading your post and agree totally! there's all that extra cleaning as well to keep your muscles toned.
My Jack Russell is the same but so far she hasn't managed to wrestle a Twix from my mouth. Have you read the blogspot Hyperbole and a Half? She's really funny, has a dog and has depression. Love inspiring stuff.
We have three dogs including a basset so I walk every day with them just love getting outside best form of exercise I think and if your feeling down their always there for you with unconditional love so agree best medicine you can get
The eyes made my heart melt. I love dogs. I have a Norfolk Terrier I mean (Terror).
I too have a series weakness for bassets although I have a Welsh Springer Spaniel. My son used to go to a school with an official school basset and it was part of his education to walk the school dogs.
You forgot to mention (maybe this isn't one of your issues or maybe not suitable for your puppy) the value of dogs for weight losers as they will often eat leftovers you might otherwise 'tidy up' yourself.
