3 days, no run.

I haven't run since Tuesday. My shin splints have been hurting all the time and not just after a run and I've been advised to rest :( they feel pretty good tonight so I plan to go back to the gym tomorrow and try again but I feel like I've let myself down :(

Hi HanPanStrawberryjam,

Really sorry to hear you're having pain from your shin splints. It's good that you've been advised to rest them, and I hope you'll heed that advice, as your health is important and pushing yourself too hard could cause you to take longer to heal.

You haven't let yourself down. I hope you'll feel better very soon, and I hope that you enjoy the weekend.

Lowcal :-)

Thanks lowcal :) think I'm just feeling a bit rubbish! I'm going to go to the gym tomorrow and use the bike and cross trainer but I cant do couch to 5k for 2 weeks u till they've fully healed :( GP thinks I may have a stress fracture in my right leg :(

Hi, can you walk instead? Ok so it takes twice as long but you still burn the same calories walking 5km as you do running it. Less strain on your body and no need to take rest days.

Hope you feel better soon, I know how frustrating it is when you just want to get on with it but get these set back. You haven't let yourself down it is sadly just one of those things and you must give yourself time to heal.

Not even allowed to walk it :( only workout I can do is cycling, cross trainer and swimming until it's healed up and no longer than 10 minutes of standing or walking :( he's not even happy about me walking the dog but says as long as it's in a field on soft ground I'm ok :( if it's no better by Wednesday I've got to go for an X-ray :( SO ANNOYING!

Nightmare! I guess you just have to live with it until it heals. Fingers crossed you're on the mend by Wednesday and you can start building on your exercise again.

Sorry to hear about your shin splints HPSJ. Dont give up on exercise just because you can not use your legs. Look on the web for the sitting down exercises. You will still burn though calories, just do it differently.

Thanks guys, back to the GP's this week unfortunately, my legs have swollen up and I'm walking like a 1 legged baby giraffe :( The general consensus is stress fractures to both shins! I'm still doing couch to 5k but doing it on the spin bikes instead for the moment!

Hey HanPan - really sorry to hear that - are you posting on the couch to 5k community as well? I'm sure you would get lots of good advice about shin splints. Luckily I haven't had them (so far!), but loads of people on there have, and they may have tips to help you recover as quickly as possible. In the meantime, it's great that you can keep going with the spin bikes. I remember also trying something like the reverse of spinning where you turn something with your arms rather than your legs. That might be good if you want to give your legs a complete rest. Maybe see if your gym has something like that? Lots of luck for a speedy recovery! :)
