Hi Wheretostart, I would walk, if you can get yourself a cheap pedometer, and track your steps, start small and build it up.

Hi, I'm new here too. I started by taken a pic of myself and recording my measurements as I know some weeks I won't lose 1lb but I will lose inches.

I had no motivation either and I knew I had to do something about it so I got a Jawbone UP24 fitness tracker which has made me get off my bum and be more active. I was doing only 1400 or less steps a day and eating as usual I'm now up to ave 9000 steps. It has a food diary on the app, it also keeps track of sleep and weight. My sleep was terrible but it's helping me solve that problem too. It gives little goals to achieve, if your idle too long it vibrates which makes me laugh every time. There is no cheating cause there's no one to cheat to only yourself. It also gives you a progress report weekly and even praises you when deserved lol I started dieting in January and I've only had the Jawbone a month now and it's probably my bf right now. But I've gone from 21stone to 18.4 since January and I feel so much better. I had extremely bad SPD so walking was so difficult now I can walk all day with hardly any pain at all. I'm so proud of myself I've a long way to go but I will get there. You could also get a fitness buddy going walking with them it's nice to chat and exercise at the same time. Unfortunately my daughter doesn't think so when I drag her out for a walk ;) Hope this gives you some ideas.

Start with the NHS 12 week plan and adapt it if you need to.

Try the totally free 5:2 Diet. I went from 12 stone 4 pounds to 9 stone 4 pounds in six months and have kept it off ever since. This was after watching Michael Mosley's excellent Horizon programme in 2012, "Eat, Fast and Live Longer" tinyurl.com/qzgo7tq or tinyurl.com/a8ppjl7 and went from a size 16 to a size 10 by eating 500 calories two non-consecutive days a week. I've been maintaining my weight loss since April 2013 by just fasting one day a week - in the past I piled the weight back on as soon as I finished 'dieting'.

I'd also recommend a free app for your phone called MyFitnessPal. Counting calories is very important so you can see how much you're eating and therefore eat mindfully rather than mindlessly. There are excellent videos in the Help section on the app that show you how it works - there's even a barcode reader to scan in branded foods.

It's important you don't eat more than your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) on non-fasting days. You can work that out here thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-.... If yours works out at more than 2000 then aim at 2000 on non-fasting days.

Here I am in the Daily Mail on 7th January tinyurl.com/m7rqecq. The other two ladies’ stories are inspiring!

Here Michael Mosley answers many questions on it dailymail.co.uk/health/arti...

I've replied to someone else that is in similar shoes to yourself with the following:

This time last year i was 18 stone at the age of 22. It was time to change! I started by walking and then did C25K, and also stuck to around 1300/1400 calories a day. I did no other form of diet or anything like that, just counted calories and weighed things. Obviously, i wouldn't use my 1300 a day on chocolate, but if i wanted a bag of crisps i had one, just counted them in!

I have not been hungry for the past 12 months, i now run between 3 and 6 miles around 3 times a week, do yoga at home and go climbing. I tend to stick to around 1500 calories a day these days, but i don't weight things/count religiously anymore- i just know what i am eating!

I now weigh 11 stone 12lbs, and that is still coming down slowly but surely.

I was always someone that would start a diet on the Monday, or do it after Christmas..until one day i had had enough!

It can be done, and in such a short amount of time too and you will feel amazing! Give it a go, and when your brain is telling you to give up or that you NEED to eat another slice of cake/chocolate whatever, think of how you'll feel after giving up, or how you'd feel alot healthier!

Not what you're looking for?
