Horizon: Hhello everybody ,i watched the... - Weight Loss Support
Horizon
I watched the last two episodes of BBC Horizon program called 'The Right Diet'.
It may be worth looking at this to work out the diet you are most likely to stick to.
When I did the test , I was a 70% 'Constant Craver' and 20% 'Feaster' and 10% 'Emotional' so the recommended diet from this programme was Intermittent Dieting.
Luckily, I have been following the 5:2 diet so I tend to look for good filling low calorie meals for my fast days and then eat normally on the other five days. My overall calorie intake for the week is reduced due to the reduced calories on the fast days (Monday and Thursday) and I was able to loose the weight I wanted to and generally been able to maintain that weight since. On other diet regimes I always put the weight back on when I stopped the 'diet' as I didn't really change my 'lifestyle'.
The reason Monday seems to be a good fast day for me is that it was to allows me to deal with any excesses I may have had over the weekend and psychologically gives me a fresh start to motivate myself for the week.
My wife's results were not as clear. She was 45% 'Constant Craver', 29% 'Feaster' and 26% Emotional'. So it is difficult to work out which diet is most suitable for her. Also, she felt she would answer some of the questions differently, as her mood changes, especially at certain times of the month.
The Intermittent Dieting mentioned in the BBC website is two consecutive days of fasting with target of around 800 calories.

I am not sure if I would be able to last two consecutive days of fasting. I think I will continue with the 5:2 diet as it is similar, but it allows me to have a gap between fasting days.
My answers change too even without the complication of biology. It's an interesting series and there are some good ideas on the website which you should be able to get to from Spain. I cant understand why you cant download. See if you can watch the last part tonight. It may answer some of your questions.
Thank you all and those who have sent me downloads ,i couldn,t download on the site
as i,m not in the uk, also no weight watchers where i live so was hoping i could share on here, it,s my first week and i,m trying to eat slowly and not pick all day,the evenings are the worst as i crave chocolate.I am half craver half emotional eater.Good luck everybody out there slimming ,going to get my son to download the info today ,again thankyou lisa.
Thank you sounds like your doing really well.I haven,t been dieting or taken my weight seriosly in years but this diet feels like one i can cope with will try mondays and tuesdays,it is a lifestyle change and i have a good mindset ,it,s good to know why i eat like i do ,thankyou very much for the advice and goodluck. lisa
This is the information, giving the various diets. The type of food is just as important as the calories.
Hello!
Apparently there is some app, that fools the system to think you are in the uk, where I don't know.
Secondly I' m came up as a constant craver, for me high protein, I get too hungry otherwise, think more re blood type (O) , high protein low carb, I need to deal with calories and this, nearly always eggs to start the day, toast etc leaves me feeling well hungry too soon, as for grains not me!
Nuts are a good snack, watch for portion amounts tho.................., this way seems successful to me, I hope it is of some used?
Thank you diana yes, i eat porrige for breakfast ,but i,m a diabetic too , so have to watch my levels.lol.thankyou.
I think the programme complicated the 5:2 Diet and I'd rather do it as originally conceived with 500 calories on each of my non-consecutive fasting days (600 for men). The diet in the programme is a variation but it's 800 calories with a strict Mediterranean diet on the other five days and I'm not sure that many would be able to sustain that.
I know that 5:2 works for me - and I've been maintaining since April 2013 just by 'fasting' one day a week.
Good. It's interesting the NHS site comments on 5:2 but says there's little reliable evidence. The programme seemed to demonstrate otherwise. The sample lost more weight than expected. (I wonder if that was incentivised by being on TV?) I wonder if you have to do 5 + 2 or can the fasting days be spread out.
I think it was talking about 800 cal for the fasting days?
The original 5:2 Diet - which works brilliantly - is 500 calories on two non-consecutive days a week and up to 2000 (or under your TDEE) on non-fasting days.
So simple!
It's worked for thousands and thousands of people, better than any previous diet has ever done and, best of all, the weight stays off just by 'fasting' one day a week.
And we would probably benefit from fasting anyway even if we weren't trying to lose weight but that's another story.
Thanks
Thank,s i don,t eat alot but ate very bad foods and skipped meals, now i,m trying to have 3 good low calorie meals a day and stop picking .If i find the weight won,t come off,i will try the fasting,i think alot of people where motivated by being on tv too, plus the 3 month diet finish line ,i have to do this for life, have a great weekend and thank you.
Perhaps I need to watch the program again, but as far as I could see, the weight loss on the 2 fasting days was because they cut out all carbohydrates. This causes a metabolic state called ketosis and they tested their urine to see if ketones were present, to demonstrate this. The body uses fat for fuel at this point and you will lose weight, although to start with, a lot will be water weight. It's debatable as to whether or not you need to restrict calories as well.
There are several studies on carb restricted diets on the PubMed site, which summarises science papers. There are also some studies on Intermittent Fasting, but possibly as non-eating days, rather than the current 5:2 diet.

No, I think you understood it. I don't remember detailed numbers but some of the group were expressing large amounts of ketones. I noted there was no tale telling about anyone who might not have achieved target. Burning fat is key to any reducing diet and even when you are successful there's the sticking points that metabolism slows as you get lighter and it's harder as you get older. Thanks for the links.
Thank,s for the info ,going to download it i think i am going to try with soups and things as even though i live on the med i,m a great fish and salad fan, well done for maintaining ,that must be the hardest bit i think.
Goodluck, lisa
