But I have a problem with that. I don't like fixating on numbers, I did that when I was a teenager and it ruined me, checking the scales every morning and every night.
So now I just judge my weight by how I feel and what I can fit into. It might not be the "right way" to do things, but it's the best way for me.
I think you are right not to buy them if you are likely to get fixated. You will be able to tell by the way you feel and your clothes. Re your other post - well done on that hill. Have you thought about c25k?
They are a vital tool for me (regaining weight coincided exactly with a period in which I didn't have any and losing it with having some and somewhere to put them) but if you know they don't work for you, and I am sure you are not alone in finding they send you a bit haywire, then you can feel perfectly confident in not using them. Or is there really an element of rebellion at being told what to do? (Am sure this is a small element in a lot of people's weight problems)
My friend keeps telling me to buy some scales, she says I can't keep track of progress if I don't, but I disagree. I prefer to feel good about what I'm doing rather than fixating on numbers.
Ah well, just because someone is a friend and means well doesn't mean they know what is best for you, nor do they necessarily have good communication skills.
However, there's shedloads of evidence generally isn't there that you are more likely to be successful (in all sorts of things if you have measurable and defined goals (assuming they are sensible and achievable!) Beware of 'feeling good' not really being 'feeling good' but wanting to avoid 'feeling bad' ie avoidance (which might be what your friend is getting at)... there's a difference between having a positive approach that accepts and celebrates you as you are now as well as where you would like to be and self-delusion.
But photographs, looser clothes, fitting into something again...yeah, why not? I found all those things changed very slowly (eg I have gone from obese to healthy BMI and lost 20kgs over 2 years... I am still wearing the same size clothes for the most part so I'd probably have been demotivated if I was relying on most of those measures but other people find they change more quickly)
And yes, I have a pair of jeans I'm wanting to get into, a healthy size 14 UK, when the jeans I wear now are loser, I'll be happy and then I will move onto my goal of the size 14 jeans. I was happiest at my size 12-14 figure, so I really want to get back to that.
Couldn't agree more!!! If you need answers, measure yourself instead. My gym never weighs, only measures. Reason being, as you lose fat but build muscle, it is a lot denser. We do have a fixation for numbers these days don't we?!! Good luck. X.
Don't fixate for sure. why weigh twice a day anyway. Once a week is plenty and don't get het up if it goes up once in a while. As long as the trend is downwards. I do it first thing in the morning when I'm at my lightest - i.e. no food inside, no clothes outside, then I'm weighing ME, nothing else. Might be embarrassing in Boots
