2stone now!!!!
Hi. This is my first post on this forum, I signed up to the couch 25 k forum and joined this one at the same time.
I have lost 12 lbs in 7 weeks by combining running with healthy eating. I have yoyo'd up and down since having my second child 2 years ago and still have a stone and a half to loose, but have really found combining healthy eating with exercise the key.
I do enjoy the running, but don't love it and now equate everything I eat to miles (you burn about 100 calories/mile whether you run or walk, so now I say to myself do I really want that biscuit, I'll have to run half a mile to burn it off. Mentally it has become easier to not eat it!
Don't get me wrong I have had some bad days still, but have managed to stay on the wagon better than before.
Don't punish yourself for what has gone before, but also don't start trying to loose weight until you are in the right place mentally or you may be setting yourself up to fail.
I also found that using a goal helped e.g by the time I go to this barbeque I want to weigh.... I found short term bite sized goals better that saying something like I want to loose 2 stone by Christmas.
I hope you get your mojo back soon and don't be disheartened!
Hi, motivation is tough to muster up and then to keep. I've tried dieting and it's never worked for me so I'm taking a healthier lifestyle approach. Tools for motivation I've come across are things like sticking up photos of yourself, I did this with a mixture of photos of when I was thinner and photos of how badly the clothes don't fit now. Sticking them by the cupboards does make you think twice before snacking. I've also spent a long time really thinking about what I want to change, not just my weight but how I feel, the things I'm able to do. I think wobblybits81 is right, setting small goals is a good idea and maybe some non food rewards for reaching those goals.
Hey guys thanks so much for your replies really means a lot to have support from others. I will defo try and take each day cause it's a hard thing to do but once am into a routine and with support from people like yourselves how can I fail much appreciated.
Good morning Reidmag27, hope this morning you have woken up with positive thoughts and are on the way to losing that 2 stone. I didn't think I would be able to do it either but 7 weeks in have lost just over a stone and a half and although I have a long way to go, it's not about denying yourself but being sensible and planning what you want to eat for the day within your calorie allowance and having a few calories left over for snacks if you want them. Don't ever say "I can't have that!" just tell yourself that you can have a little. Once you have lost those first pounds you will be challenging yourself to continue. Use the forum, they are great people here and use "my fitness pal" it makes life easier and less of a struggle! Good luck and keep us posted!
Slow and steady wins the race, it seems. I've come to the point where I don't care if it's a slow process and takes a long time - I just want to get a permanent habit of a healthier lifestyle. I'm still at the beginning - just starting week 4 - but managing a kilo off a week. Exercise definitely helps - even if it's just normal walking. It not only helps burn off the calories, it cheers me up. One thing I'm discovering is that it is NOT helpful to look at the scales too often My weight fluctuates by as much as 1-2 kilos during the week, and it's very disheartening to see the numbers going in the wrong direction. So my approach now is: weigh in once a week max. And measure waist circumference - sometimes that has gone down, even if the weight hasn't. And walk, don't run!
Oh dear, I do sympathise. Like you I diet and seem to gain weight instead of losing it. I have just re-started my diet yet again. I am weighing everything even glasses of wine (nice to have a glass with dinner). I have found what works for me - porridge in the morning made with water, a little milk on top when its cooked. I have trained myself to do without sugar on it; lunch is a big salad with lean ham - Sainsbury's do a super pack of about 12 slices of lean ham for £4, excellent value and delicious; dinner is grilled chicken breast or salmon with veg, no potatoes. I'm afraid there are no snacks as high sugar cookies, cakes, chocolate etc are out on a diet. Oh - no white foods- bread, potatoes, rice, pasta etc. I am also walking or cycling every day. I'm hoping to lose 2-3 lbs in a week. Calories work out at below 1000 but I can honestly say I havn't felt hungry. If you want a treat - low fat Greek yogurt with fresh fruit or fruit flavour yogurt. You can do it!
Well Reidmag don't take it to heart I to am on a losing run I have Osteoarthritis and Heart problems and I can't do the things I used to and I am finding it very hard to do it I get fed up with the same old things which is my downfall you have just got to keep going one day you will loss a pound and it will feel great so don't beat yourself up it's hard but keep dping what you doing and good luck.
Have you heard of the 5:2 Diet? It really is excellent and I lost three stone (42 pounds/20 kilos) going from a hefty size 16 to a 10 in six months. There's no fees to pay or ridiculous diet foods and it is said to prevent diabetes, cancer and dementia. I'm 64 and had yoyo dieted all my life, but I've maintained my weight loss now since April 2013.
The diet is based on a BBC Horizon programme that aired in August 2012 called "Eat, Fast and Live Longer" disclose.tv/action/viewvide... and a subsequent book by Kate Harrison called "The 5:2 Diet". On two non-consecutive days a week you only eat up to 500 calories (600 for men) and the rest of the week up to 2,000 (though it is best to calculate your TDEE thefastdiet.co.uk/how-many-... and try to stay under that). I found the MyFitnessPal app really valuable!
You can move your fasting days around to suit your social activity that week. Many do Mondays and Thursdays but I've always done Tuesdays and Thursdays, now just Tuesdays.
This little video will explain it further youtu.be/W9Aj6hRYg4A
I second all of that! I'm 67 and have lost over 4 stones doing 5:2. My BP, cholesterol and blood sugar levels have returned to normal and the osteoarthritis (diagnosed after xrays as 'severe') in my hips and spine do not bother me at all - in fact I have 'graduated' on C25K and am signed up for Race for Life next year - something I would never have believed I could do.
5:2 isn't a 'diet' - it's a completely different way of eating that is infinitely sustainable. 'Diets' (Slimming World/Weight Watchers/Dukan/Atkins etc) are all lists of eat this/don't eat that.
Limit your calories to 500 on 2 days a week and eat WHAT you want BUT NOT HOW MUCH you want on the other 5. As gingernut says, calculate your TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) on the link and stay below that level on the 5 non fast days. use a calorie counting app like My Fitness Pal so you can get a grasp of the calorie value of what you are eating.
Good luck
Renka just seen your post first of all well done for all your hard work it seems to have paid off and for the advice given it's much appreciated. I feel good today having so much support you have all been wonderful
Hey guys I am feeling really good today, I have started today with an apple and water, all your posts and advice is so encouraging, you all have different views and ideas which is great cause it gives me different ideas. How are you all feeling this morning? Cop boy you have a tough ride of it with your health problems but you will get there, this site is just great we are all on the same boat and it's nice to have real people with the same diet issues we will get there guys
Hi
I found when craving a sweet treat the best option was a weight watchers biscuit. Made me feel i wasn't cutting that treat out and as long i calorie counted it into my calorie daily allowance (1240), i lost 5lbs in my first week and with very little exercise. The 2nd week i introduced exercise and started losing 2-3 a week depending how much id done. I've found this time, getting use to the healthy diet in the first week helped and didn't overwhelm me when i started exercising. Good luck
See I think that would be good being able to have a treat but not to much. My problem is portion size am so greedy. How do all you guys manage the portion control? Gingernut the 5.2 diet sounds good will have look into that
The easiest way to control portion size is.....use a smaller plate.
Eat slowly and learn to recognise the 'full' signal. If you eat too fast your brain is not listening to your stomach and doesn't register the full signal so you overeat.
Only eat when you are actually hungry - often what you think is hunger is really thirst, so have a glass of water THEN ask yourself if you are hungry.
Don't 'eat by the clock'. just because the clock says 'lunchtime (or whatever) - are you actually hungry? Or are you conditioned to eat because 'it's lunch/dinner time.
Truly the only sure way to lose eight is 'eat less/move more' - there is no need to deny yourself, you can eat whatever you want to - just DON'T EAT SO MUCH of it.
yes portion size is a problem for me as well. My husband does a physical job so can eat more without gaining and unfortunately I tend to eat the same. This last week my scales have been on the bench permanently. I find at least 3 veg, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, courgette etc. on my plate. Check the calories per 4 oz. (or100 gr) BEFORE you eat them. As you can probably tell I've had a few shocks filling in my diet sheet to be shocked at how much some things like peas and corn are. Frozen veg are acceptable and handy in the freezer. Good luck.
Thanks for your reply, I think filling up on veg is definitely a good idea, thanks for getting back to me, this site is do good everyone is brills I feel really motivated today. Do you ever feel hungry when reducing your portion size?
You shouldn't feel hungry if you reduce your portion size and eat slowly. Listen to your body and eat slowly (I can't emphasise this enough) - do you really NEED all that food or have you been eating it because it's there? I suspect it is the latter.
Have a glass of water BEFORE your meal then you won't eat so much. It's all about retraining your mind and your body to accept that you do not need to eat so much. You won't starve if you eat good healthy food sensibly. Honest! You really won't!
The only eating plan that has ever worked for me is Slimming world no hunger no starving no cals and treats every day I'd you wants them yes it's does take a week or so to get your head around but when you do it's so easy. I've list 35lbs since the 8th January and that's with little exersize as I have Arthritis. It's something you can live with for life try it you may find it works
For you x
That's sounds really good Junerose, how does it work then? I have heard you can eat as much as you want is that true or rubbish? Any advice is much appreciated

Hi there i started a diet called the Terri-ann 123 plan on monday and i have lost 6lbs already. This diest is carzy cos you have to eat every 2-3 hours so your never hungry. i thought how could you possibly lose weight eating so much in a day but my god it works! I really reccommend this diet plan its so easy to follow and you only pay a one off payment for the book and you get online support practically day and night. Good luck and hope ive helped xxx
Hey Laura 89 thanks for that I will look into it. The diet sounds amazing, what sort of stuff can you eat?
Well I lost 1lb this week, a combination of portion size control and some exercise, I'm recovering from injury so walk one day take it easy the next then walk again. I'm fine during the day but my evenings are the pits, I snack some times its savoury sometime I get a sweet craving! I wish that my self control would continue in the evenings! I'm trying having sugar free jelly and 0% fat yogurt for snacking on this evening! It's so much about your state of mind, I just have no support at home!
Hey Beth 1 this forum is superb, everyone want to help each other and I think if you are trying your best and posting you will do great, I am the same can't seem to stop eating but I am going to get right on track and do it cause its me that ends up suffering when am gaining rather than losing. You will do it, all you can do is your best huni
