Hi I too am a very unsuccessful dieter. Is the 1400 a day a specific diet or just cutting down to 1400 calories of your choice?

Thanks Diane

Hi I am on week 2 of the nhs diet 1400 calories and find it better than anything done before I can eat anything as long as it fits into the 1400 ...I try not to eat sweet things as I find they make me hungry but I lost 3 pounds in the first week and next weigh in tomorrow I am also doing couch to 5 k but doing in living room kitchen running in circles mad I know!

Hi Dee121 the 1400 calories is the recommended amount for a woman on the NHS site to have a healthy, steady loss..I'm going to give it a go

Hi Huggit, that's brilliant I'll be happy if I loose 3lb in week 1, let me know how you get on tomorrow and good luck. It doesn't matter where we exercise as long as we get moving x

Hi. I started this regime 13 weeks ago. In that time I have limited myself to 1700 calories a day and made sure I did exercises for a minimum of 30 mins at least 4-5 days per week. It worked for me. I have lost 2 stone in that time. It's about being disciplined and not kidding yourself - lets face it, we have all done that - NO SNACKING!!!. I use one of the free apps on my smart phone and everything that passes my lips with the exception of water and air is counted towards my calories. It's surprising how the weight falls off - almost every week. I am very pleased with the results. PS I am a (no longer young) male.

That's a brilliant result and a very deserving one with the commitment you have made, can I ask which app you are using and are you 1700 calories anything you want up to that amount? Thanks for responding

Hello I love the healthy diet it cost nothing I used fitness pal free app to log calories im on 1500 (my choice)a day and ive lost 10lb in 2weeks this week may be slower as its been my birthday and I had 2 meals out plus a drink or 2. I work out a few times a week on my crosstrainer plus I log every bit of exercise including cleaning and school runs its amazing what adds up. X good luck x

I agree with daggersborn - no snacking! This habit is one of the most pernicious habits of the present age, and one which those of us who were young many years ago didn't do, because snacks everywhere were simply not available.

I too lost weight on slimming world then gained it again plus some. Went back onto it and really couldn't manage it. I tried weightwatchers too as well as numerous fads. I now run three times a week for 1/2 hour after following NHS couch to 5k combined with reducing my calories. I use a couple of compatible apps on my smart phone. My "fitnesspal" is free and logs all calories that pass my lips. Its very easy to use and imports exercise done on "map my fitness". The free version is great, but for a one off payment of about £2, it'll let you play the NHS C25K podcast at the same time as tracking out your run getting the inspiration from the podcast as well as seeing how well you progress. On exercise days you have more calories available to eat making socialising easier and at the end of each day it'll give a 5 week projection your weight loss if you keep it up.

I have lost 2 and a half stone since mid January, gone from a tight size 18 to a loose size 14, feel healthier and fitter than ever before and have not had to worry about things like birthdays, Easter or work trips full of hotel food.

I did it, you can too

Pollynorris thankyou for replying I to am a size 18 at the moment and a very miserable one at that. I'm 42 and peri menopausal and think this could be the thing for me. Just had boiled egg on toast, ketchup and a brew and if I've counted correctly that's come in at 290 calories and I feel full

Hi I have been very successful loosing weight historically with slimming world on the red/green days but this time it just didn't work. I have seen people have good steady losses on it so I'm sure you'll do well. I just think that my body has changed now..good luck on your journey

I did do well on it in loosing weight and as long as I went to the classes in the maintenance phase, the difficulty comes when you try to go it alone. Recipes change slightly with time and you don't know the sin value of new recipes or anything outside the book. Do you want to be going to classes indefinitely to keep up to date? Likewise I managed to loose weight on weight watchers, but again the point system keeps them in control rather than you.

If you are finding the support at classes helpful, my advise would be to keep going, the support is good. But keep an eye on the calories, ready for your maintenance phase.

I really don't want to discourage anyone trying to make themselves healthier and any support and positivity helps, I likewise don't want anyone's hard work go to waste.

There is no magic to it. Burn more energy than you consume, you'll loose weight, consume more and you'll gain. The trick is to balance what you burn with what you eat, which isn't taught by the slimming companies as well as they could.

Good luck in loosing and with maintenance. ☺

Hi from personnel experience a 1400 calories diet will work However to get quicker results don't forget excercise ! A 2 mile (1/2 hour) daily walk will suffice

So you've lost half a stone in 3 weeks? That's ace!! I've just had lunch..jacket and cottage cheese..I have been so deluded about my portion control, no wonder I ended up like this ;)

hi ive just started slimming world and am a bit worried now as someone said that after slimming world they had put it back on...

its really hard for me to lose weight and i dont no why, i lost 22lbs a while ago but put it back on again =( i walk 5 miles twice a day and only eat healthy food and no bread or sugar but i do eat things like potatoes, eggs, lean meat, fruit, veg and muller light yoghurt and fish... does anyone have any ideas for me??? =)

Penel profile image
Penel in reply tojade_clarissa

Check the Muller light yoghurt sugar content. If it's more than about 5 or 6 grams, it's added sugar. Better to buy plain ones and add what you want.

Cutting down on the potatoes and any other starchy foods can often help you to lose weight.

Hi all... Just joined this today having previously lost 3.5 stone with weight watchers 3 years ago...... I had managed to maintain my weight until end of last year but I've put a stone back on since. I'm hoping this 12 week programme will help me get that stone back off.

Hi There, I started the NHS 1400 calories 18 weeks ago. To date I have lost 23lbs. I lost around 3lbs in the first few weeks, then it went down to loss of 2lbs a week and now its slowed down to 1lb a week and its still coming off. I combined the diet with doing the C25K 9 week programme, finished that nd continue to run 3 times a week but have built up my time to running for 45/50 mins a time. Along with the running I walk for 1 -1.5 hrs at least 4 times a week and do a yoga class once a week. I'm nearly at goal, 6lbs to go. I've eaten healthy, allowed myself treats i.e., mini chocolate bar, glass or two of wine a week, I've even been out for meals, Chinese, indian to name but a few. I really think exercise is the key especially the older you get. I'm 49 and looking forward to getting to my goal weight ready for my 50th in August and keeping it off now I've learnt how to make healthy eating choices. At the greatest bonus for me is that I no longer need my blood pressure medication as the healthy diet and exercise has lowered it considerably and the dr has now officially signed me off them (I'd been on them 8 years)! You can do it, stay focused, don't beat yourself up if you slip on day, just get back on it the following day. I never thought I could do it, let alone run for 45 mins without stopping but I proved to myself I can and you can too...GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL!!!
