G.I. Diet
Hi Harriet
It can work for some people, it's worth trying for a few weeks. This is one useful link for it. Higher fibre food takes longer to digested should help you feel fuller for longer.
Hi harietrebeccaa,
G.I. stands for Glycaemic Index which is basically a measure of the degree to which certain foods raise your blood sugar levels. In terms of weight loss (as opposed to in terms of managing blood sugar levels) it's usefulness is probably that lower GI foods release sugar into your blood steam more slowly therefore giving you a longer period of useable energy and probably staving off the point at which you will want to eat something else.
High GI foods release their energy quickly and tend to leave you stretching for the next snack soon after.
However, it's important to note that low GI foods can still be high in fat - they're not 'low calorie' necessarily.
And, like all diets, it's important to ensure you still get the full range of nutrients.
My view is that it's probably helpful for weight loss purposes to try to avoid high GI food to some degree, just as it is to avoid high fat or high sugar foods, but cutting out all GI foods may restrict your diet more than is really necessary for the purposes of weight loss.
Good luck with your weight loss efforts.
