Hi sarahlouise58,

The idea is to create a calorie-deficit - that is to take in less calories than the sum of those that you use up in exercise.activity and those used to maintain your current body mass.

The figures quoted for males and females are general figures but should permit you to lose weight at about the right rate i.e. averaging out at about 1 to 2 lbs a week - though most people usually lose weight faster than that in the first week or two.

Creating a very high calorie deficit, by taking in very few calories, to lose weight faster is not a good idea and can be harmful and sometimes even quite dangerous.

The variable, is time.

If you have a lot of weight to lose, you take more time to lose it. If you only have comparatively little to lose, you'll get to the end of your weight loss journey faster.

Lots of good free advice on the NHSChoices live well lose weight pages, including a free 12 week plan.

Good luck with your weight loss efforts.

Its true that if you have a lot to lose, ie you are morbidly obese, then a VCLD (<1000 cals per day) overseen by a medical professional plus exercise could be more beneficial to you, as the health risks of being that size can outweigh those of being on a VCLD.

BUT this should only be done under medical supervision. If you feel you need this sort of diet you should see your doctor before starting out.

Otherwise, its harsh but true: tough luck - it will take you that little bit longer to lose your weight if you have more weight to lose.

A steady weight loss is much better than a drastic one as it prepares you with better, healthier eating habits, and the weight loss is more likely to stay off than come back on again.
