PCOS and liver

Hey everyone I’m 23 and have been diagnosed with PCOS for about 2 years, although since I was 17-18 my periods have been pretty irregular (3-4 per year which eventually went down to 0). That was around the time I got the implant (which was removed after 1-2yrs) so I assumed it was because of that. I would occasionally have one if I lost a lot of weight in a short space of time but other than that I didn’t menstruate at all. Since being diagnosed I am treated with Provera every 3 months to stimulate a bleed as I can’t take the pill due to being overweight, but I am hoping once I lose more weight I can go on it to regulate them. I had an ultrasound scan which I think came back clear but had high testosterone so I was diagnosed.

I didn’t think much of it to be honest as I just assumed it was something that doesn’t affect you much. Now I am worried it could be more serious than I thought, especially with the risk of diabetes which I wasn’t aware of. Diabetes is common in my family too. I also had elevated liver function tests so am being investigated for fatty liver disease and apparently PCOS can contribute to that as well. I know I need to lose more weight but I’m just really anxious now that I could get a life-threatening condition because of my PCOS!

Is there anything I should do about PCOS? Should I be getting regular scans or blood tests? Can it cause anything that will kill me?

Thanks!

Hi, I wasn’t diagnosed until I was in my 30’s as I had been on the pill from when I was 16 which kept my symptoms at bay. When I came off of it the symptoms kicked in. Any diagnosis can be scary and especially when you read all the could be’s and what if’s. I put on a lot of weight too but have managed to lose a fair bit in the last 6 months and am still on my journey. I think that we all have different experiences with PCOS and often experience different symptoms to varying degrees. For instance I have regular periods and have had 3 children without problems. I do experience bad skin, excess hair, weight gain, anxiety and pain when I ovulate. I think all we can do is try to do the things we have control over to ease our individual symptoms the best we can. On the plus side, you arrived here and please know you are not alone. Reach out whenever you feel the need, it helps. 😀
